Here are some fun tips and tricks on photographing portraits that are a little more creative.

Take 5 minutes out of your day to watch COOPH's latest photography tutorial which is all about perfecting your portraits.
The COOPH team break the tutorial into three sections: Social Media, Job Applications and Creative Gifts. The Social Media part looks at ways you can give your portraits a creative twist to make them stand out in social feeds. One way they suggest to do this is with a Lensbaby, another is by adding props and they also suggest having fun with perspective.
Next, comes Job Applications and even though we're not sure how many job applications require you to submit a photo, the tips for lighting backgrounds and your subject separately are just handy tips, in general, that you might want to try next time you're shooting portraits.
The final section, Creative Gifts, actually features some interesting ideas that, again, can be applied to everyday portraits you shoot that aren't necessarily for gifts. Playing with light and slow shutter speeds is the overarching theme for the images and this includes playing with sparklers and using light trails from traffic in towns. The COOPH team also use smoke, flour and other props to give their portraits a bit of a creative angle.
As for the DIY photo-themed gifts, they suggest making bookmarks for bookworms, creating portrait coasters and making your own cards. We actually have a tutorial on turning photos into cards should you be thinking of sending DIY Easter cards or indeed Father's Day cards in June (should you be very organised).
Other COOPH tutorials well-worth checking out include 'How To Make A DIY Photography Studio At Home' and '4 Fun Smartphone Photography Hacks to Unlock Your Creativity'.
