How Well Can A Computer Critique A Photo?: EyeEm Vision

When you have a huge collection of images, finding the best photos can ba a tricky task and that's why online image bank EyeEm has created their own automated system to analyse and rank images.

EyeEm Vision, as it's called, looks at individual photos and ranks them on their aesthetic qualities. The system also tags images automatically and generates a caption by combining the tags it has come up with.

Commenting on the tool, EyeEm said: "Each year, millions of new photos get uploaded to EyeEm. We try to see the majority of them, but our photo editors are only human and can’t possibly catch all great pictures."

You can put the AI to the test yourself with your own images or samples provided by EyeEM. Once the system has done its sums, a percentage bar will tell you how aesthetically pleasing your image is along with suggested tags and a caption.

We tried it out with a photograph of a Starling perched on a bush that has a clear blue sky behind it and the results were pretty good. The AI scored the photo's aesthetics at 64% and it came up with plenty of accurate tags and a pretty spot-on caption: 'Low angle view of bird perching on tree against clear sky.' The 'bald eagle' tag is a little random but one wrong tag out of 16 is rather good going.

EyeEm used the tool to put together and end-of-year list that shows the best images uploaded to their website during in 2016 and you can see the images over on the EyeEm blog
