Honor 20 Performance

The performance section is where we look at the image quality performance of the camera. Additional sample photos and product shots are available in the Equipment Database, where you can add your own review, photos and product ratings.

Huawei Honor 20 Sample Photos

Sample Photos - Overall, image quality is impressive with sharp, colour-accurate photos captured most of the time. On occasion, the Honor 20 did oversaturate reds and greens but some may like this. Portraits are great with good levels and sharpness/detail but when using bokeh modes, the smartphone does clip edges. Selfies are excellent and they're improved further with the in-built beauty and bokeh modes (so long as you don't overdo the strength of the effect).

There's a night mode built-in but when we turned the lights off in our studio, the results weren't great. However, to say it was captured handheld, on a smartphone, shows progress and promise for future devices. Plus, compare it with the 'normal mode' in the same shooting situation and you can see much more detail. For better results, you need did some light in your photos such as street lights or the sun setting.

The 48MP Clarity shots have better dynamic range than the 48MP images when used indoors but they do suffer from noise more. Outdoors, the Clarity mode overexposed the sky meaning the results captured with the normal 48MP mode were better. The colours/dynamic range is also slightly better in the 48MP image than they are in the 12MP shot, too. However, is it such a difference that the 48MP mode makes us go 'wow'? No, it's not. As with most 48MP smartphone cameras, they bring minimal improvements.

Huawei Honor 20 Lens test images

Lens Performance -  The ultra-wide lens is a useful addition but detail/sharpness isn't quite on par with the standard, 1X lens. Colours aren't quite as vibrant either. There's no optical telephoto lens, just 2X digital and beyond which isn't brilliant. Yes, it gets you closer to subjects but you lose detail, sharpness and when you zoom in, your shot takes on an oil painting look. Stay away from the 10X zoom unless you really need it as it's hard to capture a sharp handheld shot with it.

What is impressive is the macro mode which focuses down to 4cm, showing plenty of detail in the leaf and the sunflower bud shot isn't bad either (although, it could be a little sharper/brighter).

Huawei Honor 20 ISO test images

ISO Noise Performance - ISO range goes from ISO50 to a whopping ISO65535 but some of the bigger ISO numbers can only be accessed at certain light levels. Stick to lower ISO numbers where possible as even ISO400 shows some loss in detail.

Huawei Honor 20 White-balance test images

White Balance Performance - AWB does an excellent job under all three lighting situations, with the AWB Fluorescent shot only showing a slight coolness. The Fluorescent shot is rather warm but the Tungsten result is accurate.

Huawei Honor 20 Digital filters

Digital Filters - Digital Filters can be applied after capture and they include various vintage-inspired looks as well as black & white options. Some are demonstrated above.

Panorama |

Panoramas are stitched well with accurate colours and sharp detail. Shadow areas are a little dark but this image was captured on a rare sunny day in the UK so the smartphone could have struggled with the particularly wide dynamic range.

Video - The Honor 20 captures video in 4K at 30fps, FullHD at 30fps or 60fps and 720p at 30fps. Colour reproduction is good and panning smooth but sharpness could be better.
