The Huawei folding smartphone is official with 3 screens, front facing camera and a £2000 price tag!
| Camera Phones
2019 is definitely the year of folding smartphones as Huawei has now officially launched the Huawei Mate X at the WMC in Barcelona (you can watch the launch at the bottom of this article).
The Huawei Mate X has a rear 6.3-inch and front 6.6-inch screen when in smartphone size and when folded out, you have a phablet size screen that measures 8-inches.
From the preview, the screen-to-body ratio of the Huawei Mate X is much better than the Samsung Galaxy Fold and there's no notch, giving users an even better viewing experience. The bezels are thinner, too, and when the device is in tablet form, it's actually thinner than an iPad - pretty cool.
"Reimagined Technology"
The folding joint has been named the 'Falcon Wing' and Huawei say they have been working on the design for 3 years to ensure there's no gap between rear/front parts when folded and it folds slightly different to the Samsung Fold with both screens ending up on the outside rather than folding inwards.
Not much information has been released on the camera, yet, but we do know it's a Leica lens and it's pretty cool that you can capture a photo with a smartphone-sized device then fold the screen out to preview the image in more detail. You can also take a self-portrait of someone and they can see what they look like on the screen facing them before you hit the shutter, giving them the chance to alter their pose, sort their hair out etc.
5G is supported which Huawei says future-proofs the device and there's a 4500mAh battery with fast charging (Huawei's best fast charging technology to date).
The Huawei Mate X comes with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of Memory and for now, the Huawei Mate X will only be available in blue but there is a case available to protect it.
Price & Availability
As for price, and availability, Huawei is launching in the middle of 2019 for 2299 Euros which is just under £2000 and £200 more expensive than the Samsung Galaxy Fold which will be available in May for £1800.
We also know that the Galaxy Fold will have 6 cameras and you can learn more about these in our coverage from the launch event of the Galaxy Fold and new Galaxy 10 smartphone.
More Folding Smartphones
The Royole FlexPai has already been announced, although, its design is a little clunky in comparison and Xiaomi is working on a double-folding model which is currently in development with another company they wish to be nameless (for now).

If it had been a digital camera, the reviewers had killed it because it did not had a grip large enough. The Leica M3 didn't have any grips, and would consequently have been dismissed too...
