Launch Event

Huawei hasn't kept it a secret that the new Mate20 and Mate20 Pro were going to be announced today but it's not until now that it was confirmed that the new premium smartphone has 3 rear cameras (no monochrome lens this time, though) and a bigger screen.

Joshua Waller, ePHOTOzine's Technical Editor is at the launch event where he's said: "The Mate series is always the first to have the latest features and technologies. The Mate 10 series, for example, was the first to have f/1.6 aperture lenses so it's no surprise these latest smartphones come with impressive specs."

The Huawei Mate20 Pro has an 87% body-to-screen ratio, has a thinner bezel than its competitors, such as the iPhone XS, and the top-notch is smaller, too. Also, as the Huawei Mate20 Pro has an in-screen fingerprint scanner (Mate20 Pro), this will have helped keep the bottom chin size small.

The overall screen size of the Mate20 is a little bigger than the Mate 10 at 6.53" and has a 1080x2244 resolution. The Mate20 Pro has a 6.39" screen with a 1440x3120 resolution.

As you expect from Huawei smartphones, the design is smart, symmetrical and comfortable to hold and following in the footsteps of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Huawei's new top of the range flagship smartphone has been created in conjunction with Leica, whose lenses appear in the smartphone again.

Battery life is longer thanks to more efficient internal workings and a 4200mAh battery (Mate20 Pro, on the Mate20 it's 4000mAh) is built-in along with the fastest charge speed currently available - in 30 seconds, the smartphone can gain 1% of its battery! Plus, as you expect from new smartphones, they are wireless charging compatible. If you purchase the Pro, it supports 40W 10V.4A SuperCharge which will give you 70% battery power in 30 minutes! And, it's the World's first wireless reverse charging device so you can power other devices from your smartphone.

On the Huawei Mate20 Pro, the rear camera features three lenses: 40MP f/1.8, ultra wide-angle 20MP f/2.2 and an 8MP f/2.4 3x telephoto lens. The Mate20 also has three lenses but they are an ultra wide-angle 16MP f/2.2, 12MP f/1.8 and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto lens. Huawei also promises an excellent ISO range, good low light performance and steady shots thanks to the built-in IS. Plus, the Huawei Mate20 Pro has an impressive 2.5cm macro performance and it also has more reach than the Mate20 with an 80mm 8MP lens compared with the 52mm found on the Mate20.

On the front, there's a 24MP f/2.0 camera on both smartphones with live bokeh effects.

You'll have noticed there's no mention of a monochrome lens and that's because of the 20MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle lens which has replaced it. All of the rear lenses, along with the camera's flash, have also been repositioned into a square centred on the back of the new smartphones.

HDR technology promises to capture images with better dynamic range and more detail and as multiple lenses are built in, you can give portraits a bokeh effect thanks to the depth technology that's now commonly seen in many premium smartphones. The ISO range on the Mate20 Pro reaches an impressive 102,400 and 4K video can be captured by both smartphones.

Both phones will be powered by the Kirin 980 (75% improved CPU performance) and are IP53- (Mate20) and IP68-rated (Mate20 Pro) for dust and splash resistance. Both smartphones are also meant to be easier to grip, durable and are fingerprint resistant - something we'll be able to confirm when they're out of their box.
