It's been no secret that the flagship Huawei P20 was going to be unveiled today but until now, the specs and design of the new smartphones were just what was circulating on rumour sites but we now have the official specs, pricing and all of the other details you'll need to decide if the Huawei P20 and Huawei P20 Pro is the device for you.

Richard Yu, CEO at Huawei Consumer Business Group, is currently on stage in Paris where he's introducing the new Huawei smartphone line-up which Huawei is describing as 'a photography renaissance' that's Powered by AI, as the Mate 10 Pro is, and co-engineered with Leica.

Huawei's vision for smartphones has always been to create ultra-slim smartphones that have a beautiful design and the best cameras possible and this theme has continued with the P20 range.

The Huawei P20 and P20 Pro are designed with photography in mind. In fact, Richard Yu has even gone as far to say it's designed for 'professional photography' something we'll find out when we put the new device to the test.

Backing this statement up is the triple lens camera built into the Huawei P20 Pro. The main 40MP camera features a f/1.8-aperture lens with 27mm equivalent focal length and is powered by a 1/1.73" RGB sensor. The second camera has 20MP, features a f/1.6-aperture lens with 27mm equivalent focal length and has a monochrome sensor so you can shoot better black & white images and it also helps with low light. The final camera is 8MP, powered by an RGB sensor and features a f/2.4-aperture lens with 80mm equivalent focal length. This third camera also has OIS and 5x hybrid zoom is built in. More impressively, the Huawei P20 Pro outputs 10MP images by using the 40MP sensor and combining the pixels to produce the image. This can give 5x optical zoom (cropped) and the telephoto lens also outputs 10MP images, equivalent to 80mm. Plus, you can shoot handheld images with exposures up to 6 seconds long without shake spoiling your shots!

P20 Pro

The camera built into the Huawei P20 doesn't have three lenses but you do get a dual-lens camera. The main camera features 12MP, a 1/2.3″ RGB sensor and f/1.8 aperture with a 27mm equivalent focal length. The second camera features a monochrome sensor, f/1.6 aperture and a focal length that's 27mm equivalent.

Both smartphones feature a 24MP selfie camera that also has various beauty functions built in, including 3D portrait lighting that's very similar to the effects you find on the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus. Plus, as multiple cameras are built in, both smartphones are capable of blurring backgrounds to create bokeh.

The screen on the Huawei P20 Pro measures 6.1" but the bezel remains small so no extra bulk is added to the smartphone. The screen is actually bigger than the screen found on the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S9 and the top notch on the screen, where the speaker sits, is much smaller in size than the one found on the iPhone X. The screen on the P20 is slightly smaller at 5.8" but it's nowhere near tiny.

When it comes to power, the P20 Pro has a larger battery (4000mAh) than what's found in the Samsung Galaxy S9 and iPhone X plus, the overall design of the smartphone is slimmer, too. The P20 battery is slightly smaller than the one found in the P20 Pro.

As you'd expect, both smartphones are water and dust resistant and both capture 4K video with stabilisation. The P20 Pro can also capture slo-mo video at 720p.

Other new features include a change to the fingerprint button which is now used for navigation as well as unlocking the phones and 360-degree face unlock is built-in.

If you want to spend a little less money on a new Huawei smartphone then the P20 Lite could be an option with its 16MP dual camera and 5.8" screen. The camera doesn't feature AI-assist and the battery is slightly smaller at 3000 mAh. The processor is different to that found in the P20, too, as it's the Kirin 659 Octacore rather than the Kirin 970 with NPU.

P20 Lite

Both the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro will be available in Twilight, Pink Gold, Midnight Blue and Black. The Huawei P20 Series will be available to buy in the UK in April and to pre-order from today, from retailers including Carphone Warehouse and EE. Pricing varies between retailers. If you purchase directly from Huawei, the P20 Pro is priced at £849, the P20 at £599 and the P20 Lite at £329.
