Get Creative Indoors With Olympus Kit

If the weather's frightful outside, and you can't bear heading out, there are lots of creative photography ideas for you to have a go at indoors. Here, we list just a few indoor photography ideas. 

Christmas macros - At this time of year, you've most likely got all the Christmas decorations out, so the house will be bursting with macro photography opportunities. The baubles on the Christmas tree, intricate ornaments and freshly picked festive foliage all make for brilliant macro subjects. Get your tripod out and use a wide aperture (low number) to throw the background nicely out of focus and draw the viewer's eye to the decoration. 

Window light portraits - You don't have to have lots of expensive equipment to have go go at some window lit portraits on a rainy day. A standard zoom lens will be fine, or even a compact such as the Stylus 1 will be ideal for this type of work. You don't need a lot of space to have a go at this either, just enough to seat or stand your model next to the window. You'll need a reflector, a simple piece of white card or foil will do, to help spread the light more flatteringly across the face. Remember to focus on the eyes, and use a reasonably fast shutter speed to avoid blur.

Food photography - Christmas is a great time of year to have a go at some food photography. There will be feasts and buffets galore, so get your camera out and capture those delicious looking snacks and desserts. Use a shallow depth of field, and try to pick out one area of the food that looks particularly yummy as the main focus of the image. Using a different angle to the usual hovering over the place stance will yield more flattering results. Move around and adjust the lighting if you can until you're happy with the results.  

Cutlery close ups -  If you have a few spare hours one day, you could try getting creative with your cutlery. Everyone has it, and it's relatively easy to create patterns and reflections using your knives and forks that are pleasing to the eye. Give them a good polish, and set up your design on a black background or a patterned cloth for some more abstract reflections. A macro lens and a tripod will be ideal for this, and make sure there's lots of natural light to create those reflections.

Still life - What better rainy day project than a bit of still life photography. You could create a festive mini display using ornaments, presents and decorations, for something a little more Christmassy. Make sure you use a plain background, and make sure it's crease free if you're using a sheet. Take your time to arrange a composition that's pleasing to the eye. Using one lamp or light will create depth and atmosphere in the shot. Make sure you use an aperture of around f/8 or higher to make sure everything is in focus.
