Introducing The Novoflex 600mm - A Lens That Could, Quite Possibly, Get You Arrested

Introducing The Novoflex 600mm - A Lens That Could, Quite Possibly, Get You Arrested - The Novoflex 600mm is a weird lens that might get you close to wildlife but you might also be mistaken for a sniper.

Photography fan Mathieu Stern purchased a rather eye-catching old lens at a yard sale for 15 Euros, which may sound like a bargain considering it reaches 600mm, but the shape might just put you off.

The lens Mathieu unboxed is the Novoflex 600mm and it actually looks very similar to a large gun (fast-forward to 1:04 in the video to see Mathieu unveil it).

The Novoflex 600mm lens features 28 aperture blades and actually has an average price of $600 but the problem is, the pistol grip design makes it look like you're carrying a weapon rather than something to take photos. The lens, which was designed with wildlife photographers in mind, was actually first introduced in 1955 and you use the pistol grip to focus the lens.

"Can you imagine what would happen to me if I used the Bazooka lens in Paris," says Mathieu.

Mathieu does use the lens in his video, but he ventures far away from the French city to somewhere much less populated by people. The results aren't actually bad, video quality is OK as well, but the lens did draw plenty of attention with one chap even taking Mathieu's photo so perhaps it's not one we'll be looking out for at car boot sales anytime soon.

I once had to reassure people that I was not using a gun when I tried an old Zenit sniper camera and 300mm lens. It was a terrible machine incidentally.
But Novoflex were well known and well used in their time.
Not surprising in the current circumstances but how sad that we have to consider nowadays that armed police may descend on us for using a camera.
15 euros for a lens like that is a tremendous bargain.

Wow that takes me back...Grin Although I never had one I always had a certain undercurrent of desire for it.

Even all those years ago it was a lens likely to get you a certain amount of attention - nowadays it could prove terminal....

Interestingly, I have just watched an old 1980 ish BBC thriller called Kessler about the hunting of a former SS officer. In one episode, the pursuers were using a Zenit sniper camera and the 300mm lens. It was pristine and remarkably did not require focusing..! It also took the photographer very close to his subject for a 300.
