The ability to carry large amounts of storage in devices which are small enough to fit in a pocket is something many of us now take for granted as, after all, we now have a lot of data we need to back up (particularly photographers who certainly don't want to lose any images!). One brand whose name has become a reliable choice in the external Solid State Drive (SSD) market is Samsung and recently, they have introduced the Samsung T7 Shield - an external rugged SSD that, amongst other things, brings an improved IP65 rating to Samsung's already popular line-up of Samsung T7 SSDs.

The Samsung T7 Shield has the same shape as the SSDs that came before it (T7 and T7 Touch) with a solid, full aluminium body that brings robustness and heat dissipation to the device thanks to its high thermal conductivity. It's also covered with rubber to make it rugged and it also has an IP65 rating, improving on IP68, which means it can withstand a drop from 3m and it's also dustproof as well as water-resistant.
Size-wise, it's actually tiny, looking to be about the same size as a credit card and weighing just 98 grams so it's most certainly compact and lightweight. You won't really notice it adding much weight to your cabin luggage or rucksack when out walking that's for sure.
"For years, Samsung Portable SSD T series was renowned for being 'small'. However, Samsung is now ready to add new reputation for being 'durable' with its new Portable SSD, T7 Shield." Samsung.
Designed to work across multiple devices, Samsung's T7 Shield can store large numbers of pictures as well as 4K/8K videos on a PC, Mac or Smartphone (Android) with Samsung rated read speeds of 1,050 megabytes per second (MB/s) and a write speed of 1,000 MB/s. This is approximately twice as fast as its predecessor, the T5, and up to 9.5 times faster than external hard disk drives (HDDs). The high-sustained write performance, which allows content creators and professionals with broadcasting cameras to shoot 8K and12K videos, makes the T7 fully compatible with the likes of Black Magic, and similar, cameras; something which hasn't been done with any of the previous Samsung T7 SSDs released.
To connect the drive to a device, the T7 Shield packaging, which uses one-third of the tray packaging compared to prior generations, contains a cable with a Type-A connector and another which is Type-C.
Additionally, the T7 Shield has strengthened security with hardware encryption to protect data, even in the unfortunate scenario of the T7 Shield becoming lost/stolen. The SSD also comes with access to Samsung's Magician software which can be used to manage the drive and Samsung's Portable SSD software where updates can be applied along with added security such as setting a password.
The Samsung T7 Shield is available now in beige, black or blue with two size options: 1TB and 2TB. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) are as follows: £134.79 for the 1TB and £250.99 for the 2TB. Both options also come with a three-year limited warranty.
