Jessops is encouraging digital camera and scanner owners not to send an E-mail – but to send a P-mail instead.

Europe’s leading photographic retailer is offering free software that makes it quicker and easier than ever before to share digital images via electronic messages.

The software – called Picture Share – offers a whole host of benefits for both the sender and the recipient, by embedding images within a P-mail (short for Picture-Mail) which can be read using any standard messaging software such as Outlook Express.

For the sender, the software automatically reduces each image to the optimum size for electronic distribution - bringing an end to long uploading times, or the need for time consuming re-sizing of each photograph using a software application.

The sender can also add a message as part of their P-mail, which once despatched can be treated like any e-mail message – including being forwarded to additional recipients, or replied to.

The sent message can be quickly downloaded, and the picture is viewed by the recipient without the need for any additional software. The P-mail contains a thumbnail of the image which, when clicked upon, takes the user to a full-size view stored on a separate server. Non-HTML e-mail clients are catered for by a click-through text link.

Best of all, the whole service – software, sending and storage – is completely free save for the user’s normal internet connection charges, and is extremely easy to use.

The sender simply launches the Picture Share software, creates a new message, and then drags and drops their selected images into the frame before clicking the ‘Send’ button. The message can be created off-line, and the software advises how long each P-mail will take to send and receive at a variety of connection speeds.

The Picture Share software can be downloaded free of charge by visiting the web site at www.jessops.com, and clicking on the Internet Printing link. The free software for Jessops’ internet photo printing service Print@net can also be downloaded from the same location.

Alternatively, Picture Share is available on a free CD with the purchase of any digital imaging hardware from Jessops. The CD contains the full Jessops Picture Suite, including the Print@net software and Jessops Picture Manager, which offers image organisation and basic editing tools.

The Picture Share software can be used on any internet-ready PC with a minimum specification of a Pentium 166 processor, 32MB of memory, 65MB of free disk space, and running Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 4.02 or later.
