Being yourself is often hard, perhaps not least as you don’t necessarily know who you really want to be today but Olympus visionary John Nassari might just be able to help you address this with his latest exhibition at the Art Bermondsey project space in SE1. ePHOTOzine's events reporter, Stuart Fawcett, went along to the private viewing to hear more about John’s work.

So who are you, and what sides do you show to different people? Are you fun loving and easy going or aloof and professional?

I particularly like this photo as it really shows the different roles we each assume and particularly, as in this case, the map behind shows a split India and Pakistan causing us to even question our distant identity.

Or how about this image where we, perhaps, are almost sharing secrets with ourselves and being both confident and shy.

John does not title his images, so it's very much left up to you, the viewer, to try and guess or perhaps even reflect your own duality in how you would perceive such a scene. Some images might suggest petulance, judgment or even plotting while others suggest freeing yourself, relaxation or harmony - it’s really up to you to decide.

John takes each of the images with the camera mounted on a tripod and he sits in the chair or position opposite the person and interacts with them to develop the expression. Then, they go off and get changed while he swaps to the other side to assume their previous position and once they return, the interaction is reversed with John remotely triggering the camera a second time as they express their ‘Alternate’ self. The images are simply combined in Photoshop to create the appearance that the person and their alter egos are in the same frame.

John has a wide range of specialist subjects and has had a long history with using photography to portray issues as well as shooting wedding, popular stars and commercial subjects. His website is well worth a look around. He runs his own company with both permanent, regular contract staff and even an intern learning the trade. If you can, get to the gallery by Saturday 14 Jan, and you can catch the last days of the exhibition. Or perhaps just let yourself be your own alternate person once in a while!
