The Kata 3N1 - 22 DL is an innovative rucksack that enables quick and easy access to your equipment. Kata claim that you won't find a more lightweight bag that protects your kit as well as this one. The bag only weighs just over a kilogram, and is made from lightweight material that still fully protects your equipment. It has been re-designed with feedback from previous users.

3N1 - 22 DL

Kata 3N1 - 22 DL Features

The bag can be worn three ways, as a right sided sling, a rucksack, and a left handed sling. This gives the bag great flexibility and leaves you to decide how you want to wear it. The bag easily swivels around your body so you can then remove your equipment quickly and with less risk of dropping it. The bag holds a DSLR with a mid lens zoom attached, three to four other lenses and a flash gun in the bottom compartment. The top compartment can be used for your iPad or other things that you want to take along, like your lunch.

Key Features

  • 3 way straps
  • Carries a camera with battery pack plus 4 lenses and a flashgun
  • 2 main pockes
  • 2 smaller pockets
  • Tripod securing straps
  • Strap to attach bag to wheeled suitcase handle
  • Raincover
  • Carry handles
  • Mesh inner pocket for small equipment

Kata 3N1 - 22 DL Handling

The bag is designed so that you can swivel the bag to your front in a sideways position and access your equipment easily. Clips stop you from unzipping the bag too far one way or the other, as the bag is designed for access from both sides. The straps are designed to cross at the front, so then you can unclip one strap and swivel the bag around to your front to access your bag without fear of dropping your equipment. It is different, but works well.

The bag is an unusual shape, but still fits well and feels comfortable and uncumbersome. It may look very square to the eye, but this is an ideal shape for carrying your all important photography equipment safely. The bag feels well made and is simple to navigate despite its unusual shape. The movable pads in the bottom part of the bag are easily moved so that they fit your camera and equipment the best they can.

Kata 3N1 - 22 DL Performance

We managed to fit our Olympus E-30 with a wide angle lens attached, a fisheye lens and a telephoto lens in the bag, with room for more equipment such as a flashgun or remote release. It was quite snug to get two lenses in next to each other, but this is what you need to keep your equipment secure. It's easy to swivel the bag around once you've unclipped one of the straps to access your equipment. It is an odd feeling to have the straps crossed over the front, but the system works well.

Kata 3N1 - 22 DL Value For Money

The bag retails for around £80, which is expensive, but the bag is well made and will definitely protect your equipment. Kata say they will give you a refund if you find a more lightweight bag that protects your equipment as well as theirs does. Other bags on the market which carry the same amount of stuff are the Lowepro Slingshot 302 AW, which is a single strap sling style bag. It is available for £94.95. The Tamrac 3385 Aero Speed backpack is a double strap rucksack that holds the same amount of equipment for aroung the same price as the Kata, £84.95.

Kata 3N1 - 22 DL Verdict

The Kata 3N1 has an innovative and unique design which makes it stand out from the rivals. The versitility of how you can wear the bag sets it apart from the rest of the competition. You might feel a bit restricted with the cross over style of the bag's straps, but it feels secure and makes it very easy to unclip and swivel the bag for quick access to equipment. It is well worth buying if you're after a lightweight, versatile bag that will fit everythign you need for a day out inside.

This bag is a unique and comfortable way to carry your equipment.
