Kelly Moore Kelly Boy Bag Review: Kelly Boy BagThe Kelly Moore range of bags are designed by a photographer who was fed up of the grey and black photography bags that all looked like men's bags. So she decided to make her own stylish bags for women and also made one design for men, the stylish looking "Boy Bag" seen here. The bag is available in a number of colours including black, grey, caramel, brown, and mustard shown here.

Kelly Moore Kelly Boy Bag Features

Despite the bag looking like it's made out of leather, it's in fact a man made waterproof material and has a padded interior with compartments for a Digital SLR, lenses and accessories, or a compact system camera, as well as a section for a laptop.

Key Features:

  • 2 front zipper pockets with
  • 1 large outside back pocket (16 inch) with hidden magnetic closure
  • 2 side pockets
  • hidden magnetic closure on outside flap to close bag.
  • 3 Padded, removable, adjustable Velcro dividers, creating 4 sections inside bag for gear.
  • Removable Laptop divider.
  • Exterior walls & bottom of the bag are padded
  • Outside dimensions: 16 (width) x 11.5 (height) x 4.5 (depth) inch
  • Adjustable Strap (up to 56 inch)
  • Stands on its own
  • Shoulder Pad Included
  • Antiqued Brass Hardware (depends on colour of bag)
This bag can carry: Up to 10 inch lens, camera body, flash, phone, batteries and other accessories

Kelly Moore Kelly Boy Bag Handling

Kelly Moore Kelly Boy Bag Review: Front Pockets
Front Pockets - there are two front pockets with both a zipped section that fit camera chargers or compact cameras, as well as a smaller front section and a larger zipper that would fit an A5 (paper!) notebook comfortably. The side pockets will fit a phone or ipod, or pens easily.

It feels and looks like it's made out of really soft leather, but when you smell the bag it's clear that it isn't made out of leather, but instead some kind of manmade material.

Kelly Moore Kelly Boy Bag Review: Inside the bagInside the bag there is ample room for a mid-size DSLR body like the Olympus E-3 or E-5, as well as 2-3 lenses. Here we've loaded it with two lenses and the FL-50R flash and an old 15 inch IBM thinkpad. The bag is quite deep inside allowing additional storage on top, such as a thin jumper or other accessories.

Adjustable shoulder strap with a fairly well padded shoulder pad - it features the leather-like material on one side and a grippy black rubber surface on the other helping it stay on your shoulder.

Kelly Moore Kelly Boy Bag Review: RearThe rear features a large pocket held shut with an invisible magnet - this is large enough for oversized A4+ magazines to be held comfortably.

Kelly Moore Kelly Boy Bag Performance

The magnetic fastenings to close the bag work well when there is not too much in the bag, but if you do need to pack more into it then it can become difficult to keep the bag closed. They also mean it's very quick to get into the back to access your equipment.

Fully loaded with a laptop, some magazines, a couple of cameras, lenses, chargers and a jumper the bag can become quite heavy and on long distance walks it can become a strain on the neck. Altering the position of the strap and instead hanging it over one shoulder can help, but for longer periods of time it would be best to avoid overloading the bag. It would most likely suit ultra compact laptops such as a Macbook Air, or instead an iPad rather than the bulky 11 inch Alienware laptop I use (2kg, 4.4lbs).

I was pleased to see that the bag is padded throughout, with every area being well padded. For example, even the opening top flap is padded meaning that all of your gear is protected. The bag fits under the seat in front of you on an aeroplane and will fit in the small thin luggage compartments above the seats in trains in the UK.

Value For Money

The bag is available for around £179 from www.everleaf.co.uk. Looking at alternatives there aren't many camera bags styled like this bag and fewer leather camera bags available, making this quite a unique bag. If you were to look at branded leather camera bags from alternative manufacturers there are a few from Billingham and start at around £140.

Kelly Moore Kelly Boy Bag Verdict

This is a great bag, that is certainly unique in it's style and design, with excellent padding and lots of compartments and pockets to give real versatility. Trying to find an alternative that is similarly styled is difficult and in some ways this justifies the high price of the bag.
Kelly Moore Kelly Boy Bag Review:

It looks good but the price is high for what it is.

It looks to me as though there's nothing to stop rain entering the bag at both ends of the flap?
