LaCie today unveiled a new combination drive that incorporates both DVD-RAM and DVD-R technologies. The LaCie DVDRAM/R offers the ability to record DVDs that can be played back on any home DVD-player. The storage formats main benefit is its high storage capacity, allowing for it to not only store a large photo collection, but also some home videos or a collection of music MP3's.

LaCie claim the DVD-RAM technology provides random-access performance equal to a hard drive allowing users to access specific files or video frames almost instantly. The re-writability of the DVD-RAM format, combined with the high capacity is ideal for backup and fast data recovery. Media is available in the following sizes: 2.6Gb, 5.2Gb, 4.7Gb and 9.4Gb.

The DVD-R technology combines a storage capacity of 4.7Gb, however unlike with DVD-RAM the discs can only be written once. Users can create either DVD-ROM or DVD-Video discs and because they cannot be erased or altered, the media offers secure, removable storage.

In addition to the writing capabilities the drive also works as a universal reader, accepting: CD-ROMs, CD-Audio, CD-Rs, CD-RWs and Video CDs, as well as DVD-R, DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM discs. It is available with FireWire support providing compatibility with almost any Mac and IEEE1394-equipped Windows computers.

Availability and Pricing
The LaCie DVDRAM/R will be available in October for 645. The price includes all cables, manuals, a software suite (LaCie Combo Pack for DVD-RAM and PrimoDVD for DVD-R), a 4.7Gb DVD-RAM disc, and a 4.7Gb DVD-R disc.
