Leica CL Vs Leica TL2

Leica has expanded its mirrorless camera range with the introduction of the Leica CL which, as well as coming from the same country as the Leica TL2, it also shares the same 24-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and Maestro II processing engine. Both mirrorless cameras share other similarities, too, which we talk about in more detail below as well as a few key differences which make the cameras more individual.

Price

We know there are camera features to talk about but the question most people always ask is 'how much does it cost?' And the answer to that question for the Leica CL, which will be available from the end of November, is £2250 (body only). The Leica TL2 is priced at £1700 and lenses start at £1,300. If you look at the Leica CL and lens combo options, it brings the price of the two cameras (when taking lenses into consideration) closer together as the Leica CL + 18mm Lens combo is available for £3150. There's also a 'Leica CL + 18-56mm Lens' combination priced at £3275.

Camera Design & Shape

The Leica CL has a classic Leica look, with an aluminium top and bottom plates and a leather-like surround in the middle while the Leica TL2 has a much more futuristic vibe thanks to its silver colouring and the fact that it's machined from a single block of aluminium. A grip is built into the shape of the TL2 body while the CL is much flatter all the way along the front. Although you can purchase a grip for the CL should you think you'll need it.

The flatter, cleaner look is carried onto the back of the TL2 with just the large LCD touch-screen taking up much of the space. As a result, most of the options are changed via the screen but turn your attention to the CL and you find a navigation pad and three buttons: Play, Fn and Menu. The screen is still touch operated, however.

Turn your attention to the top plate and both cameras have top dials but only the CL has buttons within the dials which can be 'clicked'. The right one doubles as a customisable function button and the left can be pressed in to change the shooting mode. The dials can be used to change exposure compensation, shutter speed and aperture speed, depending on the mode and in between these two dials is a top LCD display so that you can see the settings at a glance. There's no top screen on the TL2 but you do get to use the main touch-screen to choose options and the left dial (on top of the camera) can be customised to various settings via icons found on the camera's screen.

As for actual sizes, the CL measures 131 x 78 x 45mm while the TL2 is a little wider at 134mm but is smaller in height and depth at 69mm and 33mm, respectively (probably due to the lack of buttons). The CL comes up a little heavier at 403g as the TL2 comes in at 384g.

Viewfinder & Screen

The Leica TL2 doesn't come equipped with a viewfinder, just a 3.7inch touch-screen which has 1.3m dots. The new Leica CL has a built-in electronic viewfinder that is impressively large considering the compact size of the camera, with 0.74x magnification and 2.36m dots. It gives a clear view of the scene which is detailed and has good colour reproduction.

As mentioned, the TL2's screen takes up the majority of camera's back. It measures 3.7" and features 1.3million dots. The screen on the CL is slightly smaller at 3" but both are touchscreens.

Video, Wi-Fi, Memory & More

Both Leica's have slots for SD/SDHC/SDXC cards but the TL2 also offers 32GB of internal memory and can capture frames at 20fps using the electronic shutter. The Leica CL can shoot at 10fps using the mechanical shutter, and the TL2 can shoot at 7fps with the mechanical shutter. As you'd expect, both cameras are Wi-Fi compatible and shoot both JPEG and RAW files. The both also capture 4K UHD video.

CL looks more like the traditional Leica M, TL2 reminds me the Sony NEX5 , does anyone remember them?

Oops - those dimension look like a pretty wild variance - to many zeros on the CL.
Width 1310mm 134mm
Height 780mm 69mm
Depth 450mm 33mm
But in the article its right.

Apart from the FPS and the cost, whats the difference on the spec sheet?
