We had a closer look at the new Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm f/1.7 ASPH Micro Four Thirds lens, at Photokina 2018. It gives the equivalent of 20-50mm in 35mm equivalent terms. It offers a constant f/1.7 aperture, and has a 77mm filter thread. From first impressions, this is a serious looking lens, and is quite large for the Micro Four Thirds system, albeit with a premium build, and premium finish. Have a look at more images below:

30 Oct 2018 12:36PMI just learned this isn't a zoom lens at all in the commonly understood way. Instead of selecting any angle of view within its range it is limited to increments which equivalence 20, 24, 28, 35 and 50mm in FF format. Talking of equivalence, in terms of total light gathered and depth of field characteristic, it's equivalent to that larger format at a constant maximum aperture of f3.3. Yep, the greatest scope for subject isolation will be like a 50mm prime at f3.3.
It looks like a pretty big chunk of glass to me - and my bet is it will be staggeringly expensive - somewhere between £1500-£2000 at a guess.
To put that in perspective, right now you can buy a Sigma 18-35 f1.8, stick a speed booster on it and wind up with a zoom range lens roughly 25.5-50mm f2.5 equivalent. Buy wisely and you can get that for under a grand. If Sigma + Metabones/Viltrox can achieve that, albeit with considerable weight, why can't Panasonic?

The press release says:
"The zoom range of the VARIO-SUMMILUX covers 10-25 mm: Starting from a wide angle and reaching to the natural perspective of human vision. It is designed and developed to fully support photography as well as video recording on a professional level."
I'd imagine video recording would be awkward if it jumped between the focal lengths. The presentation showed five different focal lengths, to show that the lens is designed to give the performance of 5 different prime lenses (20,24,28,35, and 50mm equivalent).
