Leica S Typ 007 (9)

The Leica S-System was developed from the ground up as a purely digital camera system, compared to other medium format digital camera systems, such as the Pentax 645Z, PhaseOne, and Hasselblad medium format cameras which are designed on 645 digital backs and legacy lens systems.

The new Leica S (Typ 007) was first shown at Photokina 2014, and is available now for £12,900 inc VAT.

Leica says the camera is comparable in size to a full-frame DSLR (although not as small as the smaller DSLRs like the Canon EOS 6D and Nikon D610). The Leica S (Typ 007) is the fastest medium format digital camera ever - as well as the most compact medium format camera system available.

The latest Leica S (Typ 007) features a 37.5 megapixel CMOS sensor, for improved speed, including 3.5 fps continuous shooting, fullHd video using the full-frame as well as 4K video recording, fast live view, revised focus system for improved speed, and the camera comes supplied with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

Leica S-E (Typ 006) is a lower priced, entry level model, with the same CCD sensor as the original Leica S (also known as Typ 006). There is also likely to be a price reduction due, across the S range, to make the S-E more competitive.

The camera build is very robust, and benefits from being an all-in-one medium format Digital SLR, rather than a digital back attached to a camera body. The Leica S (Typ 007) features a stainless steel bayonet, cable connections with strain relief, Corning Gorilla Glass display protection, and a tough weather sealed body. Has both compact flash and SD slots, can create a backup onto the second card.

There are 10 Leica S lenses currently available (24-180mm), 6 of these are available with a Leica 1/1000s central shutter (CS lenses).

Third party medium-format lenses can be used with adapters for Hasselblad H (TS) / V and Contax/Mamiya/Pentax 645 lenses, with support for autofocus (Hasselblad  and Contax), aperture, and central shutter control (Hasselblad), flash sync.

The Leica S (Typ 007) menu system has been updated to make it even easier to use, as well as making it familiar to people who may have used other Leica cameras.

The Leica S (Typ 007) has a unique cinematic effect on video, thanks to the full sensor width being used in FullHD recording. The camera also records Cine 4K (Super 35 format), has stereo mics built-in, time coding and focus peaking.

High ISO performance doesn't look that great when you consider what Canon and Nkon can do at similar pixel counts, nor does it look to be a patch on the latest 645 Pentax either - and that has way more pixies...

Granted it may be mainly a studio camera but the SLR design and presumably handling suggests rather more encouragement to get it out and about where you might just feel the need for a bit more ISO speed...
