Leica SL (Typ 601) Vs Sony Alpha A7 Mark II, Canon 1DX & Nikon D4s

We compare the heavy-weights of the professional camera world with the new Leica SL (Typ 601) to see if its stats and features make it a camera you really should be paying attention to.

Leica SL (Typ 601) , Sony Alpha A7 Mark II, Canon 1DX & Nikon D4s

Lecia's stepping that bit further into the professional camera market with the introduction of the Leica SL (Typ 601) - a camera that fuses the best of Leica's technology into a solid metal body aimed directly at professional photographers. Leica is calling its introduction 'a new milestone in professional photography' and with its speed and promise of 'exceptional imaging performance', it's easy to see why.

As the new SL is a full-frame mirrorless camera, many will automatically compare it with the likes of Sony whose A7 Mark II camera, for example, is almost £4k cheaper than the new Leica. However, as the cameras in the Sony Alpha series line-up shoot at a maximum of just 5 frames per second, they're not entirely comparable with the SL that captures shots at 11fps (24mp), but we thought we'd mention them as a lot of people will, more than likely, simply look at the price of the new Leica SL and think: 'I'll just buy a Sony".

The high-speed continuous shooting capabilities of the Leica SL actually puts it in competition with high-speed, full frame alternatives such as the Canon EOS 1D X (18mp, 14fps) and Nikon D4s (16mp, 11fps). The Leica SL is priced more closely to the 1DX and 4Ds, too.

The 1D X and D4s are both larger and heavier than the SL, but they do have lower resolution sensors. The Leica SL is noticeably larger than other full frame mirrorless cameras such as the Sony Alpha a7 series, though. LCD monitor size is negligible, but the resolution of the SL's screen is impressively higher. However, the large electronic viewfinder (EVF) with its very high resolution of 4.4m dots and a clear display, will probably mean you'll prefer to use this when taking shots rather than the rear screen.

The ISO range of the Leica SL when compared with the 1D X and D4s isn't as wide, but it can capture 4K videos, something the other two cameras can't do, at 30 frames per second or in Cine4K at 24 frames per second.

As expected, the design of the SL is distinctively Leica with its solid aluminium body giving a sleek and modern finish that most definitely stands out against the chunkier 1D X and D4s DSLR bodies. However, looks aren't everything and it will be interesting to see how the image quality of the Leica SL stands up against the other professional camera giants when it arrives in the office for a full review.

In the meantime, have a look at the specifications of each camera in the comparison table below and have a read of our hands-on, first impressions review of the Leica SL over in reviews where you'll also find sample photos

Full frame, mirrorless, USB3 etc lots and lots of the latest bits included. Nice thin light design. Being mirrorless - super quiet shutter too I assume.

I don't know if the Leica and its lenses are weather sealed but this looks like a dam good camera to impress others down the club. Pop a pancake lens on this and walk around like you own the scene.

Nice set of sample images too with rich colours.

Impressed with the fact that they have stepped up a sensor size with this.
