LG G8 ThinQ Smartphone To Feature Advanced Facial Recognition - LG's G8 ThinQ smartphone will feature ToF technology in the front camera setup, for better bokeh.
| Camera PhonesLG has released a few more details about its next flagship camera, in the run-up to this year's Mobile World Congress where it is set to be announced.
We learned that it will be called the LG G8 ThinQ, and that it will feature ToF technology as part of its front camera array.
What is ToF technology?
ToF, or time of flight technology, uses image sensor chip technology to capture infrared light as it is bounced off the subject, giving a faster and more effective result in ambient light and lessening the load on the processor compared to other methods. Other 3D technologies use complex algorithms to calculate an object's distance from the camera lens, and this new REAL3 sensor from Infineon Technologies AG looks to be a step forward.
Other phones have used ToF technology before this one - the Honor View 20 has a rear-facing ToF sensor. The technology should be great for photography lovers, allowing more accurate background blur in portraits, as well as offering a secure face unlock. It will also assist with AR applications, delivering an excellent recognition rate.
LG say it'll 'deliver a new level of front camera capability in a smartphone'. The G8 ThinQ is due to be announced fully around 25-28 February 2019, during MWC in Barcelona.
