As the nights draw in, it's tempting to hide away inside where it's warm, however there is one advantage of it getting dark earlier and that's low light photography as low light city shoots and evening / night themed shots can be captured at more reasonable hours. If you don't fancy heading out onto the street with your camera we've also listed tips on taking photos in dark buildings and advice on shooting low light self portraits at home. (Click the titles to read the articles.)

If you are heading out to capture outdoor evening shots, do wrap up warm and take someone along with you if you can, both for safety reasons and company. A tripod will be handy but if you're going to be walking, pack a monopod. A cable or remote release will minimise shake as you won't have to touch the camera when setting off your long exposures. If you want to use shorter shutter speeds then a camera that copes well with noise at higher ISO levels, such as the Canon EOS 70D which will allow you to keep shooting when light levels fall thanks to ISO 12800, will be useful.

Don't forget we have a Canon EOS 70D up for grabs in our wildlife competition. Visit the competition page for more information.
