Photo retouching has always been and probably will continue to be a subject which divides the masses. Some see it as an essential step in the creative process while others think it destroys the 'pure' photographic process and as a result, the viewer of your images won't see a true representation of what was captured.

Whatever your view, one thing that can be agreed on is the fact that the debate is never out of the spotlight for long with articles appearing weekly, if not daily on celebs 'photoshopping' their own images (not very well in most cases) and photographers debating the topic in forums across the web.

One of the latest professional photographers to share their views on the subject is fashion photographer Nigel Barker who digitally retouches his own images and supports the editing process of portraits. In the short video below, Nigel refers to history and how applying make-up, in some cases to extreme, is something we've always done to 'better' our appearances and that adding lighting, playing with camera settings and digitally retouching images are just modern methods we use to extend this process and enhance the way we look.

Nigel does, however, make a very good point that the digital editing of images is something that needs to be carried out delicately, carefully and with common sense. Altering someone's overall physical structure isn't something he supports either. One of his last lines of the video: 'We’ve been doing it forever, and we’re not going to stop' will no doubt re-fuel the on-going debate, with those campaigning for change not really liking the statement and others agreeing that yes, fashion images do need to be retouched as this is what the world has come to expect.
