The new Nikon 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens is significantly smaller than the previous Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED lens, at 147.5mm in length compared to 222.5mm, and has a completely new optical design using 16 elements in 10 groups, vs 10 elements in 6 groups in the predecessor.

The new lens is also nearly half the weight of the previous version, weighing 755g vs 1440g, making it much more appealing to those that wish to travel as light as possible. The smaller size is possible thanks to the use of a Phase Fresnel lens, designed to correct chromatic aberrations, as explained on the Nikon website.

It's difficult to appreciate how small the new lens is without seeing the lens in person, so we have shown it next to the previous version. The new lens features Vibration Reduction (VR) which was not included with the previous version, and is effective up to 4.5 stops according to CIPA standards. Additional photos can be found below:
