Nikon has announced that it is developing a new AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens.

The fixed focal length, super-telephoto lens will be compatible with Nikon FX-format DSLRs but no information on when it will be available or at what price has been announced yet.

Nikon says the new 500mm lens is 'significantly smaller and lighter' than other lenses of the same focal length and this is due to the adoption of the same type of Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element used in the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR, released in January 2015.

The Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element, developed by Nikon, provides better chromatic aberration compensation performance when combined with a regular glass lens element which, in turn, means fewer lens elements can be used so you get a lighter and more compact lens.
