Nikon Coolpix P1000 (17)

The Nikon Coolpix P1000, takes the "ultra zoom" bridge camera to a whole new level - with a 125x optical zoom lens - the lens is equivalent to 24-3000mm, a whole 1000mm more than the Nikon Coolpix P900, with "only" 83x optical zoom lens. The P1000 features a 3.2inch screen, and high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF) with 2.36m dots.

To help control the whopping 125x optical zoom, there is side zoom control, and a snap-back zoom button. There's even a Moon mode for shooting photographs of the moon. Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) system gives 5 stops of image stabilisation. For more advanced photographers, there is full manual control, a Flash hot-shoe, and raw shooting.

Did you shoot any RAW tests with the P1000?

Viewing the test images at 100% - sharpness seems lacking and straight lines get wobblier the greater the zoom. At 3000mm I would deem the image unusable.
I'm guessing in-camera processing may be partly to blame (assuming these are JPGs from the camera). What 'quality' was set for these? Be interesting to compare its RAW results.
Specs read well, but the resulting images here are unimpressive.

Hi, I suspect the wobble is due to atmospheric conditions, such as hot air from the traffic. We will be taking more pictures and adding them as soon as possible. We also shot raw and will be uploading them shortly. Thanks Josh

Hi joshwa, I second the request from bgbg1 for RAW image files.

In return I may offer a hypothesis as to why the pictures look soft, apart from the atmospheric conditions (which obviously play a role here):
The diffraction limit (= theoretical resolution limit) for this combination of lens aperture, focal length, and sensor size is only 2 megapixel.
Given that the camera has a 16 megapixel sensor, it should come as no surprise that the pictures look a bit soft by necessity.

Thanks for sharing the recent NRW files, I have processed them with Lightroom the results were very clean with a minimal noise and sharp. I was also able to retrieve a lot of data from the shadows. Looking forward to getting my P1000 unit next week. Here is the girl phot for example, after the process and conversion to Jpeg. 320094_1536079058.jpg

You can never take good images at this focal length, I had the P900 and beyond 1000 mm it wasnt much use.
