On the back of the cameras, there is a 3.2inch vari-angle screen, which is a touch-screen on the D5500. The optical viewfinder of the D5500 features an eye sensor so that the camera knows when you are holding the camera up to your eye. The D5300 features built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, whereas the D5500 does not feature built-in GPS.

When you view the top, you begin to see some of the size difference more clearly. With a redesigned and smaller hand-grip the D5500 (on the right) may appear to have a disadvantage compared to the D5300. However, when you view the bottom of the camera, you can see how the D5500 offers a much deeper grip, as well as more space between the lens and the grip.

The Nikon D5500 offers an improved grip, both at the front, as well as at the back with the rubber grip now extending further, giving your thumb more to hold on to. The HDMI port is now on the right-hand side of the D5500, above the memory card compartment.
