Info from Nikon Rumors

Nikon Japan has filed a patent for split pixel patterns and cross on-sensor PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus) including an electrical circuit design.

This technology has been used previously in Nikon 1 series cameras however it'll be interesting to see what the new patent leads to in new mirrorless and DSLR models alike.
