Today, Nikon have announced their new flagship
prosumer digital camera - the 5 megapixel (effective) Coolpix 5000. This is
Nikon's first 5-megapixel prosumer camera and they have designed it to satisfy
the advanced amateur or enthusiast.
The Coolpix 5000 has a 3x, 28-85mm (35mm equivalent) Nikkor zoom lens which incorporates three aspherical lens elements. Nikon say that it offers fast speeds in start-up, autofocus and zoom operation, with a shutter delay short enough to rival SLR digital competitors. The specification and features are similar to those one might expect to find on digital SLRs, but in a more compact and lightweight design. The dimensions of the Coolpix 5000 are 101.5x81.5x67.5mm. Built from durable, magnesium alloy it weighs approximately 360g without batteries. It has a built-in speedlight and a hotshoe to accommodate an external flash.
Availability and Pricing The camera won't be available in the UK until January 2002 and is expected to be around 1,000.
