Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S MTF Charts

How to read our MTF charts

The blue column represents readings from the centre of the picture frame at the various apertures and the green is from the edges.

The scale on the left side is an indication of actual image resolution and sharpness as LW/PH and is described in detail above. The taller the column, the better the lens performance.

For this review, the lens was tested on a Nikon Z 7 II using Imatest. Want to know more about how we review lenses

CA (Chromatic Aberration) is measured with any in-camera corrections switched off, so far as we can control anyway. CA is not going to be a problem. The figures measured centrally are approaching zero at all focal lengths. The only slight jump in CA measurements is at wider apertures at the edges, and even then will probably go unnoticed for most images. Further correction can be undertaken in camera or in software, but it is unlikely to be needed.

Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S Chromatic Aberration Charts

How to read our CA charts

Chromatic aberration (CA) is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software.

Apochromatic lenses have special lens elements (aspheric, extra-low dispersion etc) to minimize the problem, hence they usually cost more.

For this review, the lens was tested Nikon Z 7 II using Imatest

When we first use the lens we see a message that if we use this lens, there will be in-camera distortion correction. It doesn't add “so there” but the message is clear and we have to accept it anyway. As distortion measures just -0.31% barrel at 24mm, -0.05% barrel at 35mm and +0.03% pincushion at 70mm there is nothing to complain about - the system does its job well and the lens is virtually rectilinear throughout.

Bokeh is gorgeously smooth and gentle, adding to the feel of portraits especially.

Flare is very well controlled, even with very severe backlighting. It is very difficult to generate any artefacts, even with harsh lighting at the edge of the frame.

Vignetting is most obvious, and it is clearly apparent, wide open and at wider focal lengths. This can be corrected if desired, but it also can be used creatively with the right images. Portraits, for example, can often be enhanced by darker corners.
