Nokia 5.1 Plus Performance

The performance section is where we look at the image quality performance of the camera. Additional sample photos and product shots are available in the Equipment Database, where you can add your own review, photos and product ratings.

Nokia 5.1 Plus (X5) Sample Photos

Sample Photos - The camera coped reasonably well in very challenging conditions, managing to pick out vivid colours of the paths and housing despite heavy frost and fog. Sharpness is good in the centre of the frame however there is a significant loss of sharpness towards the edges of the frame. The camera exposed shots well, despite the conditions.

HDR mode did a good job of picking out more green tones in the foliage, as can be seen in the two comparison shots above. The shot with no HDR looks washed out, while the HDR enabled shot adds a vibrancy to the frosty image.

Portraits taken outside with the front camera give a natural skin tone and other colours in the shot are strong and vibrant, giving a pleasing image. Beauty mode made skin very smooth, and seemed to enlarge the eyes, which was slightly surreal. The results with beauty mode were quite unnatural.

Nokia 5.1 Plus (X5) Lens test images

Lens Performance - Due to weather conditions during the test period it wasn't possible to capture images with bright sunlight to test flare. Looking at the test image we can see that the phone struggled to focus on busy scenes - parts of the images in both of these shots are out of focus. This could be down to the fog but there does seem to be a difficulty with identifying what needs to be in focus.

There is a lack of detail in the trees against the white sky - pointing to the phone struggling to photograph contrasty scenes.

The live Bokeh mode allows you to use a slider to alter the amount of an image that is in focus. The mode does a reasonable job of blurring out the background, but it doesn't really replicate real bokeh, more of just a blur.

Nokia 5.1 Plus (X5) ISO test images

ISO Noise Performance -  It's not possible to manually adjust the ISO at all - we even tried downloading apps to enable us to do this. This is a strange decision - especially in manual mode when competitors will let you change the ISO speed. However, by altering the light levels, we were able to take these photos at different ISO speeds. Noise is quite well controlled at lower ISO speeds, but detail drops off over ISO800.

Nokia 5.1 Plus (X5) White-balance test images

White Balance Performance - Auto White Balance (AWB) performs well under mixed lighting, giving an accurate representation of the scene, with the tungsten preset giving a whiter result. AWB gives a green cast under fluorescent lights, with the fluorescent preset giving a better result.

Nokia 5.1 Plus (X5) Digital filters

Digital Filters - There are several filters available post-capture, and these are pretty standard, offering a range of fun effects.

Nokia 5.1 Plus (X5) Panoramic images

Panorama mode - The camera features an automatic panoramic mode, where you simply press the shutter release button once and then follow the direciton arrows to pan the camera in the direction of your choice. Results are good for the most part, apart from the camera struggling with the white sky, resulting in parts of the image having a slightly different colour cast in the sky. The camera produces a low resolution panoramic image.

Video - The Nokia 5.1 Plus is capable of recording 1080p Full HD video through the rear camera and 720p through the front camera. Video is clear and well stabilised but the phone does struggle with lag when you move too quickly. Slow motion video is recorded at a reduced resolution of 720p.
