Olympus Stylus Tough TG-860 Performance

The performance section is where we look at the image quality performance of the camera. Additional sample photos and product shots are available in the Equipment Database, where you can add your own review, photos and product ratings.

Speed - We took a number of shots to test the camera's responsiveness, from switch on to first photo, shot to shot, focusing speed etc. We take a number of shots and then use the average to ensure accurate and consistent tests, making it easy to compare with other cameras.

Shutter Response  <0.05secs
Wide - Focus / Shutter Response  0.1secs
Full zoom - Focus / Shutter Response  0.1secs
Switch on Time to Taking a Photo  1.3secs
Shot to Shot without Flash  0.7secs
Shot to Shot with Flash  1.0secs
Continuous Shooting - JPEG
(shots before slow down)
 7fps (7 shots)
Continuous Shooting - Flash / LED  0.8secs / 7fps (7 shots)

Focus is ridiculously quick for a compact camera, whether shooting at the wide or telephoto end of the lens! The camera gives a good continuous shooting speed of 7fps (for up to 7 shots). This can be used with the LED light on, or alternatively to shoot with flash and continuous shooting, you need to select the slower 'Sequential shooting 1' option. High-speed continuous shooting at 20fps and 60fps is available at a reduced resolution of 3 megapixels.

Olympus Stylus Tough TG-860 Sample Photos

Sample Photos - Colour is very good, with pleasing saturation and reliable exposure. Portrait photos show little red-eye and the front shutter release button is a two-stage button which means you can check focus before taking the photo. Dynamic range is reasonably good, and an HDR mode can record additional detail in shadows and highlight areas.

Olympus Stylus Tough TG-860 Lens test images

Lens Performance - Images are generally soft, which is disappointing as everything else about the camera is very good including colour and exposure. The lens is quite resistant to flare, although, as there is no lens cover it's important to keep the lens clean. Distortion is minimal considering the wide-angle lens with the camera automatically correction this in camera. Macro performance is very impressive, with the camera able to focus on extremely close subjects in the super macro mode, however images are still a little bit soft, but should look good when shared on social media websites.

Olympus Stylus Tough TG-860 ISO test images

ISO Noise Performance - Photos taken at ISO125 to ISO200 show the most detail, and ISO400 still provides reasonably good results, with not too much noise and a little drop in detail. ISO800 shows more noise, and detail drops as a result, and ISO1600 is probably the highest ISO setting we'd want to use. Detail drops noticeably at ISO3200, and ISO6400 is best avoided altogether.

Olympus Stylus Tough TG-860 White-balance test images

White Balance Performance - Auto White Balance (AWB) performs well under tungsten lighting with a slightly warm result, and the tungsten preset gives more accurate colour. AWB performs well under fluorescent light, with the fluorescent preset giving a magenta colour cast.

Olympus Stylus Tough TG-860 Digital filters

Digital Filters - There a number of Art filters, as well as creative effects available, and examples can be found above. To access the HDR mode you can select this from the scene menu where there are also a number of underwater scene modes.

Panoramic | 1/250 sec | f/3.5 | 3.7 mm | ISO 125
Panoramic | 1/250 sec | f/3.5 | 3.7 mm | ISO 125

Panorama mode - The camera features an automatic panoramic mode, where you simply press the shutter release button and pan the camera from one side to the other, and the camera automatically stitches the image together for you, however the image produces is of a low resolution.

Video - The camera records full HD video at 60fps, with stereo sound and optical zoom and quality is reasonably good. High-speed video recording is available, recording 240fps video at a resolution of 640x360 and 120fps video at a resolution of 854x480.
