VG-170
Olympus VG-170

Olympus add a new high-tech compact to their VR Series which has a super-wide optical zoom lens and a 16Mp sensor. Their VG Series also gets a new smart model that features a flash Olympus say is 'best-in-class'. It has 14 Megapixels, a 5x wide optical zoom and a 3in LCD screen.

The VR-340 is available from late February for £129.99 and the VG-170 is available from mid-February for £99.99.

Olympus VR-340

The new VR-340 keeps the metal design of its predecessors but packs a 10x super-wide optical zoom into its slim case. It also boasts 16Mp (instead of 14), higher ISOs and more creative effects.

A new grip will help you keep the camera steady and the built-in Dual Image Stabilisation cuts out blur caused by camera shake or fast-moving subjects.

You can enhance portraits in Beauty Make-up Mode, take photos in 3D Red & Cyan and apply nine Magic Filters to your shots. The Magic Filters can also be used on any 720p HD Movies you shoot.

The VR-340 is available from late February in silver, black, red and purple for £129.99.

Olympus VG-170

The flash found on the Olympus VG-170 is nearly twice as powerful as the flash found on regular compact cameras (the VG-170’s guide number is 8.8 compared to 4 to 5.6 for regular digital compacts). It also features 14Mp, a 5x wide optical zoom, a 3in LCD screen and a host of automatic features and effects.

The camera's flash can light up people or buildings fully 15 metres away on the wide-angle setting and in Long Flash Mode, the camera automatically trades off Megapixels against ISO sensitivity to give you the right light setting.

The new Smart Grip, designed to ensure a firm hold for stable shots and reduced handshake (even when shooting in dark places) should help to minimise blur along with the built-in Digital Image Stabilisation. Automatic features such as i-Auto, Face Detection and AF Tracking help you pick the right camera settings and Magic Filter effects can be applied at the touch of a button. The wireless
Eye-Fi card compatibility means the camera's cable-free and it captures 720p HD Movie with sound.

The VG-170 is available for £99.99 from mid-February in black, white or red.
