ONA Union Street Messenger Bag Features

ONA's Union Street camera bag features modern styling yet keeps a quality, retro feel. Made from Waxwear canvas that's waterproof, and featuring a leather base, straps, carry handle and shoulder pad, the bag is made from high quality materials. Antique brass hardware is used, to add to the retro feel.

You can open the satchel either by unbuckling the straps, or unclipping the fittings underneath them. The straps can be buckled to three different lengths, enabling you to keep kit snug and secure even if it's a variety of sizes. 

Inside the satchel, you'll find a 15 inch laptop compartment on the back wall, the divider for which is removable and is secured by a leather bound velcro strip. There are four vertical removable dividers for your kit, two tall and two short. 



In front of the main compartment there is a long zipped pocket with four leather memory card holders and two pockets with leather tabs/front linings for easier access. On the back of the bag there is a magnetically secured slim pocket, and on each side there is a pocket for small accessories, too. 

The bag has a leather carry handle on the back, as well as a fully adjustable shoulder strap with leather shoulder pad. The base of the bag is also leather, making it hardwearing and easy to clean.

ONA Union Street Messenger Bag Handling & Performance

The bag is very slick and professional looking, and even to the trained eye, it would be quite difficult to tell that this is a camera bag. 

The adjustable shoulder strap makes it easy to fit the bag to your body, and it's quick and simple to access your kit, whether wearing the bag or not. Simply press the brass fitting in and push upwards to open the bag. 

Padded dividers are easy to remove and replace to fit around the kit you wish to take. With two taller dividers and two shorter ones, there are more options for your kit, for example if you wanted to pack a telephoto lens, the two taller dividers could be placed together to create a secure housing for this. The shorter dividers could be used as support for a camera placed face down with a lens attached, as we did here.



We were able to snugly fit an Olympus E-30 in the bag this way, which is quite a chunky camera, along with 3 extra lenses. With more modern, compact DSLRs there shouldn't be an issue, and there is still some space on top of the lenses for your personal belongings.

The front pocket with built in leather memory card holders is a good idea, and the pockets featuring a leather tab on the top make it easy for you to feel for the pocket and grab your things whilst wearing the bag if you're in a rush. 

The ONA Union Street really does feel well made, with the handcrafted waxed sailcloth material flexible yet waterproof and durable and the real leather trim adding an air of class. The bag weighs in at just over 1.5kg, which isn't bad considering the tight weave of the materials used and metal and leather trims.



The leather base is a double edged sword, whilst it's tough and durable, it also makes the bottom of the bag quite slippy on certain surfaces, making it liable to slide over onto its back or front. This problem could be solved by adding some brass studs to the bottom of the bag for grip and stability. 

Value For Money

The ONA Union Street is available form Harrison Cameras for £245. This is a premium price tag for a camera bag, and if you're looking for a luxury bag made with the best materials then this is the sort of price range you're looking at. With handcrafted material and antique brass fittings, it's definitely one for the style conscious, camera connoisseurs out there. 

If you're looking for a top quality satchel, other brands to look at include Fogg, which are available from Robert White. The Fogg e-flat satchel holds roughly the same amount as the ONA, comes in more colour combinations and costs £504. 

Other similar sized and priced satchels include the Billingham Hadley Pro, which is made from synthetic material making it slightly lighter, for £169 from Harrison Cameras.

The ONA Union Street messenger is made from top quality materials and is a really classy bag that really doesn't look like a camera bag at all. It's slim, comfortable to wear and easy to customise to your needs. For the photographer about town who wants a sleek, top quality bag with enough room for a DSLR and a variety of lenses, then the ONA is a good choice. The only issue is the leather base, that while hard wearing, can be slippery on certain surfaces.

With a dedicated 15 inch laptop compartment, the bag can easily be transformed into an everyday satchel by removing the four dividers, making it really versatile. It's discreet while also remaining practical, with high quality touches that make it feel special. If you have the money to invest in this bag, it will definitely be a good choice.
