When two become OnePlus... New 7 series duo launched

Claiming to have already built a community of five million users to date, there are two new OnePlus smartphones in town. But do they add up to more than the sum of their enticingly high tech parts? Read on to find out, as ePhotozine reports from the '7 series' London unveiling...

Seeking to fulfil the tagline 'never settle', there’s a new flagship smartphone from OnePlus coming in the stylish shape of the OnePlus 7 Pro (available also in a 5G version, more on which later), with colour options including Almond, Nebula Blue, plus Mirror Grey. Sitting just below it in the company’s line up is the equally new yet slightly more affordable OnePlus 7

As is the case with every smartphone these days, the ‘Pro’ version’s credentials for use as a photographic tool are placed front and centre – in part to help justify an expected premium price tag. At the rear of the handset is a triple camera set up – comprising an ultra high resolution 48 megapixel sensor offering with bright/fast f/1.6 lens, an ultra-wide-angle 16 megapixel camera (117 degrees, f/2.2), plus an 8 megapixel telephoto unit (78mm equivalent, f/2.4) – while at the front we get a perfectly serviceable 16 megapixel camera. A further talking point on the OnePlus 7 Pro is its topside pop up selfie camera to avoid stray fingers getting in the way of your shot, with water repellant construction into the bargain.

Further core features include, inevitably, the OnePlus 7 Pro’s display, which in this instance is a 6.67-inch QHD+ (19.5:9 ratio) fluid AMOLED panel with 93% screen to body ratio, an impressive sounding 90Hz refresh rate. In terms of an operating system, OnePlus 7 Pro favours Oxygen OS 9.5 on top of Android. By contrast the OnePlus 7 features a marginally smaller 6.4-inch AMOLED display but the same 'performance DNA' including Sony's 48 megapixel sensor, and a 5 megapixel depth camera, and stereo speakers, as also found on the OnePlus 7 Pro.

A further product for OnePlus, new phones aside, is OnePlus Bullets Wireless 2 earphones - the original version having been so popular they sold out almost instantly, says the company. The new ear buds feature 24 bit high res audio and Bluetooth 5.0. It can also last 10 hours of use on just 10 minutes charge.

OnePlus CEO and founder Pete Lau says: "We're seeking to bring the best technology to more people around the world. Our community continues to grow. In the past five years I believe we've found our purpose with the spirit of 'never settle'. Today we have taken our product to a new level, pushing the boundaries of 'fast and smooth'. The OnePlus 7 Pro is the most important product we have ever made for you. Once you've experienced the smoothness I believe you will never go back."

Akis Evangelidis, Vice President adds: "We're purely focusing on the product and the end user... with no bloatware or $2000 price tag. The OnePlus 7 Pro has a new curved edges design...our core design philosophy is putting power and performance into the hands of the user. It feels very different. If I didn't tell you, you would never guess that this was glass. The front of the device is borderless, ultra smooth and breathtaking. It's the most seamless Android experience. We've been trying to develop a smartphone screen unlike anything you have seen... it's the most immersive screen ever.

"But having the best display was not enough for us. We've redefined smoothness with a 90Hz QHD+ fluid AMOLED display. Use of a smartphone has never been so fast and smooth... it's something you have to try in person. Once you do, you'll never want to go back. Videos will now look more dynamic and nuanced. We've also brought back screen unlock which is faster and more accurate - it's the world's fastest screen unlock technology on any smartphone.

"The OnePlus 7 Pro also delivers the perfect shot every time. For the first time we have a triple camera system. The main camera has a 48MP 1/2inch sensor. Individual pixel size has been increased by over 70% compared to its predecessor. The lens module has also been fully optimised with a 7 element lens design. A lens aperture of f/1.6 lets in 15% more light than before. The secondary 8 megapixel camera offers a 3x zoom telephoto lens. The third lens offers an ultra wide 117 degree field of view.

"There are 3 different kinds of auto focus technologies including ultra shot mode for a natural outlook, plus Nightscape 2.0 mode. The results are natural and breathtaking. We have the second highest score that Dxomark has ever awarded. The front camera is the best selfie camera that we have ever made and it's motorised as well as durable. We've tested it 300,000 times. This is a camera module built to last.

"The One Plus 7 Pro is 45% faster and consumes 20% less power. It can be equipped with up to 12GB of RAM. We've also developed a feature called RAM boost to reload your favourite apps and games. Not only do we have more RAM, but that RAM is smarter. Everything runs on our largest ever 4000mAh battery. Performance wise it's everything you've come to expect from a OnePlus flagship. Dual Dolby Atmos stereo speakers have also come to the OnePlus 7 Pro. On the hardware front we've packed the very best."

Aki adds that an interesting feature on the flagship phone is the Zen mode which lets users make and receive emergency calls and use the camera - and that's all. The idea is that this lets users control / regulate their usage of the phone. In short this, it believes, is the company's most advanced phone ever.

Also new is the first ever OnePlus 7 Pro 5G smartphone in association with Qualcomm and EE - the OnePlus 5G.

Christiano Amon, President of Qualcomm says the companies have been working together since the beginning of OnePlus. "5G will enable new services and business models. The apps will go beyond the phones... and you will have no limit to the power and storage available. Apps will live on the Cloud rather than the device. We're going to see a new era for the smartphone. This device has the world's first commercial 5G mobile platform, which is the benchmark for the industry. 5G is the future and we're very excited."

BT's CEO Marc Allera says that 5G will be switched on in six UK cities 'very soon.' "We have always been the first to launch new mobile experiences. For us OnePlus is one of the most important partners on the 5G journey. 5G will be a first for us and the UK. It's going to be amazing." It will be the first 5G equipped phone available with EE in the UK.
