OnePlus Concept One

OnePlus smartphones are a bit like buses at the moment - expect one and several come along at once but, unfortunately, the latest camera phone isn't actually going to be released.

The OnePlus Concept One, as the name suggests, is a concept that shows the world what OnePlus is capable of when it comes to new smartphone technology and you may well see some of the innovative technology on display in devices of the future but for now, you can just admire the very cool-looking Concept One with its McLaren inspired looks and vanishing cameras.

Like us, you might be wondering why you need rear cameras on a smartphone to be hidden from view and basically, there's no practical reason for it. with some concept devices, it's all about showing off technology but with this particular concept smartphone, it's all about aesthetics and showing the world a smartphone that simply looks really cool.

We've known for a while that OnePlus and McLaren have partnered to bring smartphones to the market (take a look at the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren as an example) with a touch of the McLaren style and the OnePlus Concept One celebrates this relationship with the hallmark Papya Orange tint appearing in a leather surround that incases the back of the OnePlus Concept One. 'Subtle' is definitely not the word!

On a side note, the hand-crafted leather is the same as you find in a McLaren 720S sports car seat (a bit of trivia for you there).

In between the leatherback, you find a glass section that plays hide-and-seek with the rear cameras, keeping the design sleek and smooth until the time you want to hit the shutter button. The technical term for the glass used is 'electrochromic' and anyone who's flown on the TUI Dreamliner will have seen a similar thing on the windows of the plane.

As the opacity of the glass on the rear can be controlled, it also acts as an electronic ND filter which OnePlus describes as an 'Alternate ND' which, if the smartphone was to become a real thing, would mean that slow shutter speed shots of flowing water would be possible.

You're probably wondering what camera technology is built into the OnePlus Concept One but, unfortunately, we can't tell you as it's a concept smartphone so OnePlus hasn't said anything about the inner-workings, display, battery, front camera or anything else you'd usually see on a smartphone spec list. You can, however, visit the OnePlus forum to see more photos of the device and to read what others are writing about the concept design.

Still, we're 8-days into 2020 and we're already seeing new ways smartphone manufacturers are trying to grab our attention and who can blame them as it's a very busy market so bringing quirky designs (pop-up selfie cameras), folding smartphones, better optical zooms and other technology to smartphones are just some of the clever ways the tech giants are ensuing we're all still, very much, interested in purchasing new smartphone devices.

If you're interested in reading about smartphones you will actually be able to buy, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite And Note10 Lite along with budget-friendly Samsung Galaxy A71 and Galaxy A51 smartphones have also been announced at CES 2020.
