OPPO Find X5 Pro Smartphone Review :

Quick Verdict

The OPPO Find X5 Pro is a modern, attractive flagship smartphone with a list of impressive features but the camera zoom is a letdown and when you consider it's priced at over £1000, it just doesn't compare to the likes of Samsung and other brands who offer 5-10x optical zoom. The wide and ultra-wide cameras are excellent, though, as are the display and overall design of the smartphone. Plus, you get some nice bonus features thanks to the Hasselblad collaboration which will tempt some to buy. However, when you look at the competitive mid-range smartphone market, there's probably more out there to tempt you away from the OPPO Find X5 Pro.

+ Pros

  • Great wide and ultra-wide cameras
  • Lovely looking device
  • Fast-charging is impressive
  • Good screen size
  • Decent battery
  • Unique camera features

- Cons

  • Price
  • Zoom is poor

The OPPO Find X5 Pro is a smartphone which, on paper, has a lot to grab the attention of photographers but is the Hasselblad name, impressive cameras and the modes/features enough to tempt those who are fans of photography?

OPPO Find X5 Pro Features

The OPPO Find X5 Pro is a flagship smartphone that has a line-up of premium features which includes a 6.7-inch display featuring Gorilla Glass Victus with either a ceramic white or Glaze Black colour option. It's a long/tall smartphone that's IP68 rated and comes in three variants - 256GB/8GB RAM, 256GB/12GB RAM or 512GB/12GB RAM.

Built into the screen is a 32MP f/2.4 selfie camera while on the back is a 50MP f/1.7 wide-angle camera with PDAF and OIS, a 13MP f/2.4 telephoto camera that offers 2X optical zoom with PDAF and a 50MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera also with PDAF. Hasselblad has also put its name to the OPPO Find X5 camera with features such as Hasselblad Colour Calibration built-in amongst the line-up of many camera modes/options. Video is captured in 8K, 4K @ 30/60fps or in 1080p at 30/60/240fps with gyro-EIS available.

Other features include an impressive 5000mAh battery with fast charging, USB-C and stereo speakers. There's no headphone jack or memory card slot, though.

As for the price, the OPPO Find X5 Pro is available now over on Amazon UK for £1049.

OPPO Find X5 Pro Handling

OPPO Find X5 Pro Smartphone Review :

The OPPO Find X5 Pro is a great looking, modern smartphone with a cool ceramic material making it look and feel like the premium smartphone it is. It feels great in the hand and even though it's on the longer side, it's really comfortable to hold with rounded edges and buttons falling under fingers easily. You can tell that quality materials have been used to construct it but they're the type that won't stand up to drops so pop a case on it if you can (one is provided in the box). We know this will stop you from seeing the lovely back design with its curved camera bump that seamlessly blends with the frame/rear of the smartphone but it does keep it smudge-free. It also hides all of the text that's been added down the right-hand side which distracts from the overall design. The camera bump is big but looks cool so this doesn't bother us and there's no rocking when sitting on a flat surface.

The 6.7-inch AMOLED display on the X5 Pro is the same as that found on the X3 Pro but why fix something that's not broken? It's a great display with good colour reproduction, excellent brightness levels and decent contrast. A tiny cutout selfie camera sits top left but this doesn't distract when using the smartphone (I think we've all got used to these nowadays).

The X5 Pro is IP68 dust and splash-proof rated but this doesn't mean it can go for a swim and there's a decent 5000mAh battery built-in with fast charging.

A big marketing point for OPPO and the X5 is the Hasselblad collaboration which brings the iconic orange shutter button to the device along with the leaf shutter sound. Unless you're a Hasselblad fan, you probably won't realise this and most people turn the shutter sound off anyway. Another Hasselblad feature is the Xpan shooting mode which applies a grainy film filter and captures images in a wider aspect ratio that can be either in colour or monochrome. It's a fun feature but not an essential tool we found we reached for all of the time.

As for the cameras, you get a 50MP f/1.7 main shooter that's supported by a 13MP f/2.4 telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and a 50MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera. PDAF is also built-in to improve the steadiness of shots.

The camera app is very much the same as any other camera app out there with just the addition of the orange shutter button and various modes are built-in including a Pro mode which Hasselblad is said to have assisted with. It is quick in use, though, and operates smoothly. The MariSilicon X neural processing chip is also designed to improve the AI and help with optimisation, producing better images/video in low light.

On the front is a 32MP f/2.4 camera and you can capture video in 8K, 4K and 1080p.

Camera Specs:

  • Rear Camera - 50MP f/1.7 wide-angle with PDAF, OIS, SLR-Level 5-axis Stabilisation & 13MP f/2.4 telephoto with 2X optical zoom, 5X hybrid zoom, 20X digital zoom and PDAF & 50MP f/2.2 ultrawide with Omni-Directional PDAF
  • Front Camera - 32MP f/2.4
  • Lenses are constructed from glass, not plastic
  • 8K, 4K and 1080-p video with gyro-EIS
  • Hasselblad collaboration - Natural Colour Calibration, leaf shutter sound, Xpan mode, 3 digital filters from Hasselblad Masters

Battery life - There's a 5000mAh battery built-in and it lasted a full day without us needing to reach for its charger. The 80w wired fast-charging is impressive when needed, though, with a battery getting 50% of its charge in around 10-15 mins. OPPO actually place a figure of '12-minutes' on this and it's about right. Wireless charging isn't quite as speedy but is available.
