The notchless, bezeless smartphone race is well and truly underway but OPPO may have just taken a few extra steps in front of the lead pack by introducing a smartphone with an under-display selfie camera.
OPPO is showcasing the new technology over on Twitter where they're telling followers:
"For those seeking the perfect, notchless smartphone screen experience – prepare to be amazed. You are taking a very first look at our under-display selfie camera technology."
Rather than popping out of the top of the smartphone, as the selfie camera does on the OnePlus 7 Pro, or a cutout appearing in the screen, as you find on the Samsung Galaxy S10 ('Infinity-O Display'), the front-facing camera on the OPPO isn't visible. Instead, it's built directly under the screen so those wanting a notchless, display with minimal bezels that's not got a hole in it either will be rather excited by the announcement.
The person in the video presses a button(s), off-screen, and a loading symbol appears before the user holds their hand above the device to show it appearing on screen, captured live by the in-built camera.
There's no information on what smartphone the technology is built in and when/if it will appear in smartphones for general sale but it's an interesting development never-the-less. We're just wondering how you'll you know where you need to look to ensure you capture the perfect selfie for your Instagram account?
As well as an in-display selfie camera, OPPO, recently introduced a flagship smartphone called the Reno with 10x zoom - a device they've been promising since the start of the year and one we were surprised to see as the company's 5x optical zoom device never actually materialised.
The Oppo Reno 10x zoom smartphone features a 10x hybrid optical zoom which is achieved by combining their 5x optical zoom sensor with an 8MP f/2.2 wide-angle lens, which effectively makes the zoom 10 times.
