Panasonic L-Mount S 24mm F/1.8 Lens Review - Performance: Panasonic L-Mount S 24mm F/1.8

Sharpness is very good at f/1.8, excellent from f/2 to f/11 and very good at f/16. The edges are good throughout, rising to very good at f/4.

How to read our MTF charts

The blue column represents readings from the centre of the picture frame at the various apertures and the green is from the edges.

The scale on the left side is an indication of actual image resolution and sharpness as LW/PH and is described in detail above. The taller the column, the better the lens performance.

For this review, the lens was tested on a Panasonic Lumix S5 camera body using Imatest. Want to know more about how we review lenses?

CA (Chromatic Aberration) is measured with any in-camera corrections switched off, as far as we can know anyway. Central figures are close to zero and even at the edges CA is well controlled. If any further correction is desired, then there are in-camera and software solutions.

How to read our CA charts

Chromatic aberration (CA) is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software.

Apochromatic lenses have special lens elements (aspheric, extra-low dispersion etc) to minimize the problem, hence they usually cost more.

For this review, the lens was tested on Panasonic Lumix S5 camera body using Imatest.

Distortion measures at just -0.63% barrel, which is excellent for a wide-angle lens. More correction could be applied using software if desired, but for most subjects, this is unlikely to be necessary.

Bokeh is less apparent as an issue in wide angles, where we are often looking to keep most of an image sharp, but the lens does acquit itself well and having that wide f/1.8 aperture increases the opportunity to look for out of focus backgrounds.

Flare is also well under control. Even bright light sources in the frame do not affect the contrast and it is only with very careful lining up of such lighting that we can persuade the lens to create any artefacts. In other words, to produce flare we need to work at it, so it is not really a problem.

Vignetting is present at wide apertures in particular, but not excessive and in any event, can be useful aesthetically and creatively.

Aperture Vignetting
f/1.8 -1.7
f/2 -1.7
f/2.8 -1.3
f/4 -1.3
f/5.6 -1.2
f/8 -1.2
f/11 -1.1
f/16 -1
