Panasonic Lumix TZ100 Silver (1)

Value For Money

The Panasonic Lumix TZ100 is available for £549 which makes it good value for money for a camera with a 1inch sensor, good zoom, and 4K video recording. Alternatives include the following cameras:

Panasonic Lumix LX100, 3.1x optical zoom, £499
Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III, 2.9x optical zoom, £559
Sony Cyber-shot RX100 IV, 2.9x optical zoom, 4K video, £729
Canon Powershot G5 X, 4.2x optical zoom, £579
Nikon DL24-85, 2.8x optical zoom, 4K video - product cancelled.
Nikon DL18-50, 3.6x optical zoom, 4K video - product cancelled.

None of these offer as much zoom, and for a similar amount of zoom with a 1inch sensor, you need to look at the following bridge style cameras:

Panasonic Lumix FZ1000, 16x optical zoom, 4K video, £549
Sony Cyber-shot RX10, 8.3x optical zoom, £520
Sony Cyber-shot RX10 II, 8.3x optical zoom, 4K video, £1000
Sony Cyber-shot RX10 III, 25x optical zoom, 4K video, £1250
Nikon Coolpix DL24-500, 21x optical zoom, 4K video - product cancelled.
Canon Powershot G3 X, 25x optical zoom, £590

Panasonic Lumix TZ100 (ZS100) Verdict

The Panasonic Lumix TZ100 offers a 20-megapixel 1inch sensor, plus a large optical zoom with a Leica 10x optical zoom lens, but manages to be much more compact compared to other cameras with the same sensor and long optical zoom, such as the RX10 and FZ1000. This makes it unique in the market at the moment, and therefore, a camera well worth buying, particularly if you want high image quality combined with good optical zoom.

The camera is packed full of features including high-speed shooting, raw mode, creative effects, a 3inch touch screen, electronic viewfinder, plus 4K photo and video recording. The 4K video recording gives high-quality video for playback on compatible 4K televisions and other devices, and the 4K photo modes make it easy to capture specific moments in time, thanks to the 30fps continuous shooting.

For the price, the Panasonic Lumix TZ100 offers a whole host of features, that are unique to this camera, and it's difficult to get anything like it, with both a large sensor, and a long telephoto zoom lens, in a compact and pocketable camera body. The camera also delivers excellent images, with good colour, good detail, and good noise performance.

Did you photoshop the red line and grey bit as a April fools?

Stick an expensive looking wooden grip on it and sell it to Hasselblad

Looks an excellent performer - my two gripes are that there isn't a hot shoe for flash and the macro could get in a lot closer... My FZ1000 has both so will stick to that for now.

I use the 400mm end of the FZ1000 the majority of the time, so the focal length of this camera falls a bit short. However, I like what they've managed to squeeze into this fairly small package.

I have recently acquired a Lumix TZ100 as a daily carry-about camera instead of my Nikon D7000. I am impressed with its range of features even though I havenít managed to investigate all of them yet. Whilst it is a little larger and heavier than many compact zoom cameras, it is easily pocketable. However, in use, because of the absence of textured grip points and a fear of dropping the camera, it is advisable to use the wrist strap provided (or a better quality one - I use a Peak Design Cuff which is excellent though the anchor straps are too thick to go through the lugs on the camera body which are too small anyway). I am particularly impressed by its macro performance and the 20 MP sensor to allow some cropping if necessary without too much loss of definition. In purchasing the camera, I was looking for a pocketable compact with a larger sensor and 10x zoom and this camera fits the bill perfectly. Minus points: the very large 400+ page manual is only available as a PDF download and the lack of textured grip points for holding the camera securely. Plus points: Image quality, macro performance, touch screen, clear menu system. Highly recommended.
