Panasonic Lumix TZ200 in Compact Cameras

The Pansonic Lumix TZ premium compact camera range has grown by the multiple of one with the introduction of the Lumix TZ200

The TZ range is popular with travellers as well as those just looking for a compact camera that has a little more punch but will the TZ200 be as popular as the TZ100 was/still is? Let's have a look at the specs to see how the TZ200 lines up against its older brother.

Sit the TZ200 and TZ100 side-by-side and you can see a slight design change with the red stripe indicating the 'premium' level of the compact. In fact, the overall design of the TZ200 just makes it a better-looking camera and it's also more ergonomic thanks to the addition of a handgrip which makes the camera easier to keep hold of. The interface looks better, too, which makes it easier to view and 'My Menu' is now built in.

Both premium compacts feature a Leica lens but the TZ200's lens has had a slight upgrade, offering 5x more optical zoom (15 instead of 10) which equates to a 24mm - 360mm (35mm equivalent) focal length compared to the TZ100's 25mm-250mm.

The same 20.1MP Back-lit CMOS sensor is built in along with the same size (3'') touchscreen, although, the resolution is slightly better on the TZ200 with 1240k dots instead of the 1040k dots found in the TZ100's screen. Plus, the 2330K dot equivalent live viewfinder on the TZ200 features 1164 more dots than the TZ100 did. Close-focusing is also improved with the camera being able to focus down to 3cm which gets you 2cm closer to the subject than the TZ100 can.

As you'd expect, Wi-Fi is built in but unlike the TZ100, the TZ200 also has Bluetooth so you can connect the camera to smart devices and share photos quickly. There's also a new L Monochrome digital filter which gives images a black & white film feel to them.

Battery life is improved with the TZ200 now capturing 370 images when using the LCD screen but this figure drops to 250 910 less than the TZ100) when using the LVF. There's also an Eco Mode available and you can top the power level up via USB.

Both cameras shoot in burst mode at AFS 10 fps / AFC 6 fps, capture high-speed video, 4K video (30p / 25p / 24p in MP4) and 4K photos at 30fps but what's different on the TZ200 is that the camera auto marks images from 4K photo sequences and it also features sequence composition so you can capture one subject in various positions throughout the frame. Staying on the creative path, L. Monochrome is a digital filter that wasn't built into the TZ100 that gives monochrome images more punch and deeper blacks.

As for overall shape and weight, there's not much really between the two in terms of size but the TZ200 is 30g heavier than the TZ100 but it's not something that's really going to weigh you down!
