Panono To Charge Users For Taking Photos

The company behind Panono, a 360 camera ball which was first announced in 2013, have announced that they want to charge users for stitching their photos together. Nice.

The company that bought Panono have emailed users of the camera to say that they will now have to pay to get images taken with the camera processed. The creators of Panono, a ball-shaped throwable 360 camera designed to give a 72-megapixel panorama image, haven't had an easy ride.

A No-Go For Panono

First announced in 2013, the premise of Panono was a good one and it quickly reached an IndieGoGo funding goal to bring it to the masses. We first got hands-on with the camera at CES in 2016, but shortly after this the founders announced that the company was filing for insolvency, and this was before most received their cameras (only 400 shipped when over 2000 people had ordered one!).

Extra charges

The Panono's assets were sold off to a Swiss company, Bryanston Group AG, who said they would continue to support the product and the servers needed to process the images it captured.

The Panono creates a 72 megapixel image using 32 cameras dotted all over its surface. The images from the seperate cameras are stitched together to create one giant capture.

Now, Bryanston Group AG have emailed owners of the Panono stating that from 1 September 2019 it will be charging users 79 European cents per photo processed by its servers.

This is a real kick in the teeth for Panono users - there's no alternative either, as there is no other software available that can successfully stitch the 360 images. Despite the steep price hike to buy the camera (it's now available for around €2140, when it was released it had a price tag of $600), it seems that the venture is no longer as profitable as once hoped.
