What is a ColorChecker?

ColorChecker Classic

ColorChecker targets are the reference standards that professional photographers and filmmakers use to ensure accurate and predictable results under every lighting condition. By using a ColorChecker, you will be able to quickly and easily capture accurate colour, instantly enhance portraits and landscapes, while maintaining colour control from capture to edit.

ColorChecker Classic targets have been used by colour perfectionists for the past decade to create custom DNG profiles for Adobe Lightroom® and Photoshop® workflows. Together with the included Camera Calibration software, you get the ultimate in functionality, flexibility and portability for a more perfect colour journey.

Use a ColorChecker to:

  • Match multiple cameras
  • Set perfect exposure
  • Ensure accurate colour balance
  • Capture accurate white balance and eliminate colour shifts
  • Achieve perfect grey balance, even in blended lighting
  • Create custom camera and scanner profiles
  • Manage colour fidelity
  • Better match skin tones
  • Creatively enhance your colours

Once you’ve got your shot and the light set up how you want it to be, place the ColorChecker in the frame for the first take. Then when editing your series of shots, use the free ColorChecker Camera Calibration Software to create a colour profile of that first shot with the ColorChecker. This allows correct colour settings to be synchronised to all images in the series (taken under exactly the same conditions and lighting). The software essentially uses the colour patches of the ColorChecker chart to calculate a neutral and accurate colour profile that you can use in your editing software.

ColorChecker White Balance - A question we get asked a lot: Why can’t I use just any white object to do a white balance? To put it simply, most objects are not actually neutral under all lighting conditions; and they’re certainly not consistent. Use a ColorChecker White Balance to get consistent, accurate colour balance, even under changing lighting conditions.

ColorChecker Gray Balance

ColorChecker Mini Grey Balance Card - The ColorChecker Mini Gray Balance Card helps in obtaining instant grey balance, evaluating studio lighting and making fast colour adjustments for both photo and video shoots. The grey is scientifically engineered to provide a precise uniform surface that is spectrally neutral, meaning it reflects equal amounts of red, blue and green in all types of lighting conditions.
