PermaJet SnapShut Folio Review : Snapshut Folio

The SnapShut Folio from PermaJet is an album / portfolio, available in a variety of styles, but unlike offerings from other brands, the SnapShut Folio doesn't use glue or ringbinders to hold images in place. Instead, prints and pages are held securely in place and without damage by a 'SnapShut' hinge. When closed, the SnapShut Folio has the look and feel of a good hard covered book, making it an interesting consideration for those who create Photobooks for clients.

PermaJet SnapShut Folio Features

This book format folio gives photographers a professional way to present their images without damaging them and thanks to the 'SnapShut' hinge, any paper type or even material can be inserted into the folio quickly and with no mess. In fact, the SnapShut Folio could be used as a file store for magazines or as a way to present dissertations and so forth at college or university as well.

The SnapShut Folio is available with black or cream coloured covers which can have a smooth or leather finish. A5, A4, A3 and A3+ sizes are available in portrait, landscape or square formats with 15mm or 25mm spines. The smaller spine holds about 35 pages/prints while the larger 25mm spine will hold about 50 pages/prints (based upon a mid-weight 250gsm inkjet paper - more sheets can be inserted if on thinner materials).

PermaJet SnapShut Folio Handling & Performance

PermaJet SnapShut Folio Review : SnapShut Folio

When in the hand, the SnapShut Folio feels sturdy, and is well finished. The leather SnapShut Folio looks more expensive and professional, but this isn't to say the Smooth version is poor, I just happen to prefer the look of the leather version.

To insert images into the Folio, you have to fold it open so the inside is now on the outside, insert your images / papers then close the Folio back up so the added sheets stay in place. It sounds more complicated than it actually is as you'll find out when you've viewed PermaJet's video demo shown below.

Once you've got a hang of how the 'SnapShut' system works, the Folios are easy and quick to use. However, if you have an image you want to remove from the middle of the stack or indeed want to add a new one, it's probably best you take the whole collection of images out, insert / remove the image into / out of the collection then put all of the images back into the Folio together. If you don't, you may find that images already in the Folio move or slide out completely which is an annoyance but it can be easily rectified by simply organising the order of your images before inserting them into the Folio.

When turning pages, movement is fluid but it's a shame they don't lay flat as they do in some printed Photo Books now available on the market. The 'SnapShut' hinge holds images securely and it takes a vigorous shake or a strong tug to remove them from the binding completely.

PermaJet SnapShut Folio Value For Money

Prices start at £16.95 for the SnapShut A5 15mm Landscape Smooth version and rise to around £57 for the SnapShut A3+ 25mm Portrait Leather version. The PermaJet SnapShut Folio is a unique item and currently, there's nothing on the market we can compare it to so we can't say the Folios are better or worse value than its competitors as there aren't any offering a product with this type of SnapShut hinge. However, the Folios are well built and offer users a quick and easy method for presenting images so if you're in the market for a new and convenient presentation method, the SnapShut Folios from PermaJet are worth looking at.

PermaJet SnapShut Folio Verdict

The SnapShut Folios are all well made, with nice finishes and are robust. They look impressive and won't fall to pieces after a couple of uses making the asking price, particularly for the smaller versions, rather reasonable. The glue-free binding method is unique and it means photographers can quickly remove / add images to a portfolio without having to start from scratch with a new presentation folio, saving time and money in the process. The SnapShut Folios are unique, practical and have a professional finish that any photographer will be happy to present their work in.
