When you think of portrait lighting, you probably start thinking of multiple light set-ups in studios but that doesn't have to be the case as photography hack specialist Run N Gun (he has a great YouTube channel where you'll find more top tips) is demonstrating in his latest video tutorial.

In his tutorial, the light from an LED video light is used to create a strong, hard light that adds mood and a bit of drama to portraits. If you don't have a video light, you could use your smartphone instead but don't use the torch; instead, use your smartphone's screen to illuminate your subject.

"When lighting your #Portraits, remember that everyone's face has a slightly different shape, and a portrait lighting setup that works for one person may not work for another," says Run N Gun. "Portrait lighting takes practice, but over time you'll develop your own favourite lighting techniques, which will take your photos from beginner to pro, Fast."

The tips shared also work for those shooting video, too.

As well as a one-light hack, we also have 9 portrait lighting tips to share with you that are presented in just 90-seconds so it's something you could even learn from on your break.
