Subjects Where Binoculars Are Useful: Pentax binoculars

Before you head out on your next photographic adventure, have you considered taking some binoculars out with you? Although perhaps not the most obvious accessory to grab before you head out of the door, there are photographic situations where having some binoculars could help you. Ricoh produce a wide range of binoculars for every eventuality, from lightweight and compact models to those with maximum reach and image quality, Find out more about Ricoh binoculars on the Ricoh Imaging UK website

Here, we list some top examples of photographic situations where binoculars will be useful:

Wild birds

One of the main pros of any type of binocular is the ability to spot things from afar. This is invaluable when out in the field looking for wild birds. Whether large or small, wild birds can be difficult to spot in dense scrubland and bushes. Having a pair of binoculars to spot the birds will avoid you trying to scout them out using one eye in your viewfinder with a long range lens. It also means you'll be able to find the bird more easily when the time comes to point your camera at it.

As well as birds, looking for wildlife when you're out with your camera can be made easier by using binoculars, They will give you a wider field of view than your camera, allowing you to then hone in on the general area with your lens and find the creature more easily. This is useful when you're out in the field and it may disturb your subject to move around too much.

Scouting for interesting landmarks

When it comes to landscape photography and you have a vast vista in front of you, it can be difficult to decide what should be included in the photo and what shouldn't. This is where binoculars can come in, as from your viewpoint you can look more closely at parts of the landscape in front of you and come to a decision on which area looks most photographically interesting. Then all you need to do is frame the image in-camera.

Abstract shots of buildings

Binoculars can also be used in a more urban environment for abstract purposes. From ground level, it can be difficult to see interesting patterns on buildings with just our eyes. These can make great abstract shots and so scouting out patterns with binoculars can be of benefit. You can then decide on the focal length of the lens necessary to capture the pattern in an effective way.

Star constellations

When photographing the stars at night, binoculars can be handy in spotting constellations and areas of the sky that are worth shooting. While your camera is poised and ready on a tripod, you can explore the sky without disturbing it - and only moving it when you've found the position you want to shoot in. Binoculars with a longer zoom range will be ideal here.
