Lamb photography tips

If you have a field where there's a public path running through it you can take photos all day long (from the path) without asking permission. However, if there's no public right of way please don't walk into a field without asking the owner if it's OK first.

Shot type

As some farmers begin lambing as early as December, come early April, they'll be more active as well as larger which gives you the chance to capture them as they leap around the field. Do be warned though, sheep don't really like getting close to people, even more so when they have a lamb to look after so don't be surprised if they run away. You may be waiting a while for them to build up the confidence to approach you so that's why a lens with a longer reach is a must for your camera bag.

If you do have particularly brave subjects get in close for frame-filling shots but don't over clutter the scene. Ensure the animals is well exposed, sharp and try blurring the background with a wider aperture to keep all attention on the lamb. Heading out when it's dull will make finding the right exposure easier and the grass will appear more saturated. The animal's coat tends to have more detail in it then too.

Don't just stay stood straight up, shooting down on the sheep as getting lower will give you shots with a more interesting perspective but keep an eye on the background if you do this – fences and other animals don't make for very interesting backgrounds.

If you struggle to single out one animal from the herd see if you can get a little higher up and shoot down on the field using the sheep to create patterns against the green grass.
