The red fox has an elongated body and relatively short legs. The males weigh about 5.5-7.5 kg, the females are a little lighter. Its fur is predominantly red, except for the belly, the underside of the chin and the tip of the tail where it is generally white or grey-white. The fox reveals all its charms in winter when its red fur shows up from the snowy landscapes - this time of year is perfect for photographing it!
Occurrence
The red fox is the most widespread predator on earth. It is present in most of Europe and Asia. It is also found in Africa, on the north coast of Morocco and Algeria. In the north, it is encountered up to the Taimyr Peninsula and on the pack ice inside the Arctic Circle. In North America, it is present on most of the continent, from northern Mexico to the Canadian arctic regions.
Behaviour
The red fox adapts to a wide range of environments: it can be found on the seashore as well as in the highlands, in the countryside or in cities, in forests, fields, meadows or even in the desert. It is mainly nocturnal and breeds between December and February. It feeds mainly on hares and rodents, and sometimes birds, reptiles, eggs and fruits.
Photographing tips
There are about 33,000 urban foxes in England: you may be lucky enough to photograph one in your town! If not, why not plan a visit to the British Wildlife Center in Surrey where red foxes live among other animals. If you’d rather shoot the red fox in its natural environment, the best way is to find a burrow and wait hidden for it to go out (approx. every 1 or 2 hours).
