Top Tips For Photographing The Swan Goose: swan goose

Coming from the wild swan, the swan goose carries an impetuous heritage. This beautiful goose is a very popular domestic animal.

Appearance

The swan goose comes from the domestication of the wild swans in North-East Asia. The species has two colour variants: a grey-brown one and a white one. The grey-breasted swan gooses have a strong, dark line, which runs along the long neck. The dye-forming cells are absent in the skin of the white individuals, giving them their flawlessly white plumage.

Both colours have a characteristic bump on the upper beak. It is always slightly larger in male than in females. It can even look like a horn in older individuals, as it grows with the years ever greater. Swan gooses have a long, swan-like neck, wide shoulders and a curved back part.

Occurrence

The swan goose comes originally from countries such as China, Japan and Russia. In the 18th century, travellers took the early forms of the swan goose to Europe and America. There, the swan gooses were crossed with domestic gooses and other species. Today, the swan gooses are mainly encountered on farm animal exhibitions, bird parks and large gardens.

Photographing tips

In spite of their domestication, we must not forget that the swan gooses come from wild animals, and thus remain unruly birds. This raw core has been preserved until now. Swan gooses are extremely irritable during the breeding season, so that nobody gets too close. Swan gooses can fly, but only to a limited extent. However, they have to move a lot, which is why they feel comfortable on large pastures with water areas.
