As photographers we are sometimes intrigued with increasingly large pixel counts and the potential for great detail in giant prints. But Christian Zuzunaga has a different view and to him, less is certainly more!

Christian’s passion is looking at the whole as the sum of its more simplistic parts; he is driven by an almost spiritual desire to express the makeup of the cities and their people around him. When I asked him if he had a favourite exhibit the idea of one over another seemed at odds with his way of thinking; his answer that that the collection makes the whole exhibition so no one item is more important than this – an interesting philosophy.

Another passion that Christian has is the way that light falls on elements of the city and how this changes over time, this to me is expressed in his work shown above with a shelf cut in a cityscape design (above) and lit by coloured angled lights; And again by the pattern of video movement (shown here as one still frame above) that occurs when things change with us and around us – the projection is simple but it reminds us of the cycle of life and how the smaller element make up a far more interesting composition.

Downstairs the exhibition has a large, 3 dimensional representation of the whole being more than just the individual parts with 2 installations made up of large bricks. In one of these all the bricks are a single colour and in the other each is a discrete colour. But both structures form an interesting collection with their own shapes and shadows.

There are regular pictures too, but each one is showing a discrete theme and isolating a particular message. If you visit, you should take a good look at each piece and see how your head interprets them, basing each decision on your own core feelings and values. If you find yourself understanding the thinkings of Carl Jung then you may be closer to understanding the messages displayed by Cristian Zuzunaga’s work.
