Pixlplay Turns Smartphones Into A Camera For Kids

Pixlplay transforms smartphones into an easy-to-use camera for children.

Pixlplay is a new product which combines a smartphone, software and retro-looking camera housing to create a camera that's specifically designed for children.

Designed to look like an old 35mm camera, the housing securely holds an Apple or Android smartphone in place and all you have to do is download the Pixlplay app onto the smartphone so your budding David Bailey can capture photos.

The case features an adjustable clamp so various phone sizes will fit and the chunky, robust design will mean your precious smartphone is less likely to be damaged.

On the housing, you'll find a rubberised grip as well as a strap which makes it easier for small hands to keep hold of it. A built-in protection screen keeps the smartphone safe along with child-resistant latches. To work the shutter button, you need to plug in a 3.5mm headphone jack that's supplied with the Pixlplay which means iPhone 7 users will have to dig out the Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter from their smartphone box.

On top of the housing is an optical viewfinder, although most will probably just use the smartphone screen for framing, and there's a lens that turns, making clicking noises as it does, along with a function dial on top of the camera but these are just for aesthetics and pretend play.

 Pixlplay app

As for the Pixlplay app, this allows kids to add stickers, silly faces and frames to images and it also provides creative ideas.

If successfully backed over on Kickstarter, the Pixlplay will be available in 2 colours from June 2017. Early Bird backers can receive a Pixlplay by pledging 20 USD.
