Pixum welcome screen

Pixum has long been a household name in the photo book industry. ePHOTOzine have reviewed their photo books and desktop creation software previously, awarding them a highly recommended accolade. You can also create several types of prints for your wall with them.

Now Pixum has launched an app enabling you to create photo books on the go, on your Android or iOS device and send it directly to Pixum via your phone or tablet. So just how good is the app? We find out here. For this review, we're using the Android app on a Nokia 5.1 Plus smartphone

Pixum Android app Features

Through the app, you can create photo books, photo prints in a variety of sizes and photo calendars. We're focusing on photo books in this review.

Select a product

Once you choose the photo book option, you're presented with 4 size options:

  • A4 landscape
  • A4 portrait
  • Square (21x21cm)
  • Giant square (30x30cm)

Then, you can choose from a wide selection of cover styles, which can be personalised with text and photos, depending on the style. Once you've selected a style, you're then prompted to allow the app access to your photos, and you can then choose your cover image/s, and add text. Then you can tap on pages within the book to choose a page style and arrange your photos and text as necessary.

Pixum Android App Handling & Performance

The app is very intuitive and Pixum have made it easy to create a relatively complex photo book on your phone. Tap the page you want to work on, select the layout you'd like and then tap on the + symbol in the middle of a photo space to select an image. You can then tap the photo to rotate, crop and edit the image. Not happy with it? Simply remove it and select another one.

You can pinch once the photo is in place to zoom out or in onto an image and alter the size of the photo space as well. If a photo is too small and will be printed out pixellated, the app will warn you with an orange or red boxed exclamation mark, depending on the severity. You can then either pinch to shrink the image until the warning goes away, or select a different one.

You don't have to add text to pages, but if you at to you can tap the 'Add caption' button at the bottom of the page layout and type it in. The size, font and colour of text can be adjusted and it can also be underlined.

Extra pages can be added by scrolling down to the bottom of the page if you run out of space, but be aware that these will cost extra.

There is a fair selection of page background colours - black white and a few different shades that are pleasing to the eye.

Pixum add a sticker

At the top of the screen next to the colour swatch there's a cartoon frog symbol, and tapping this gives you access to a variety of stickers and wording that you can add to your pages. Tapping one of these puts it on the page, you can then move it around the screen with your finger and pinch to adjust the size and angle. When you're finished placing, tap 'Done' at the top right. This sets the sticker and you can move on to the next element of your design.
